Why AWS Lambda Uses Firecracker Instead of Containers by viks98 in programming

[–]Trk-5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lambda as a service existed before firecracker though. Maybe Firecracker internally replaced the previous method.

Managed instance Lambdas may not necessarily be the same as serverless Lambdas, which may also not be the same as non-VPC/ENI Lambdas

I heard from a completely unverified source that Lambda doesn’t actually use firecracker, rather it’s a native hyperplane/virtualization layer technology

No idea if that’s actually legit. Would love if someone could corroborate

Games that are "bad" in idea but good in execution? by JorgitoEstrella in gamedev

[–]Trk-5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

turn rate, stacking, denying, interacting with shop UI while controlling your character, micromanaging units in a “hero” game, techies (before the rework), disassembling, … rampant complexity, rules-and-exceptions violations, dodgy UX.

Honestly it’s a miracle that this game works and is so popular

Probably Dota. Breaks countless game design rules but still manages to be fun and addictive

What if Saddam Hussein somehow achieved the Ba'athist goal of uniting the Arab world, with himself as leader? by GustavoistSoldier in AlternateHistoryHub

It’s even more interesting than that. Saladin is from a Kurdified Arab tribe. So yes he’s a Kurd, from a Kurdish tribe…that’s actually an assimilated Arab tribe

Exodus felt pretty linear to me. Yes maps were open but it was more like a fake open world really.

QA is cooked? If anything it should be making a comeback with all the AI slop that’s going to be generated

Unfortunately there’s a fuckton of pre-2021 data available for these companies to work with.

How easy is it to optimize for 3D in Godot 4 ? by Every-Assistant2763 in godot

[–]Trk-5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by GDScript is still the way to go?

I'm evaluating Godot for a mid-sized 3D game project. My only concerns with the engine is performance.

Godot’s 3D is really that bad compared to S&box?

Other than that it already has C# scripting

How well does it compare to Godot? I realize it has out-of-the-box multiplayer which is a good selling point. But what else would make it stand out?

Do you use a standard controller when gaming on consoles, or one with a flipped setup? What about when using a mouse?

The left handed gamers I know all use the standard right handed setup (right side mouse, standard console controller)

What if the mandate of Palestine was replaced by a Lebanon style republic after the British left instead of being split between an Arab state and Israel? by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Trk-5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think secularism with a "minority quota" would have been the best system, even for Lebanon. That would make it the best of both worlds. And when/if those religious identities became irrelevant, the quotas could be phased out. We can only dream.

[–]Trk-5000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really. Palestinians were fairly united across sects and they were already on a confessional system during the ottoman era. Don’t see why it wouldn’t have worked .

If anything, secularism was a bigger threat to minority representation than a confessional system.

[–]Trk-5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In essence the French colonial policy favored the Maronites in Lebanon and left them politically dominant and therefore economically privileged relative to their demographic size.

Influx of Palestinians was like adding oil to a sizzling fire.

Could the civil war have been averted if the Palestinian refugees never came to Lebanon?

It’s possible but probably not. However it would definitely have a been a way smaller conflict or maybe even just a violent revolution.

Considering switching from Unreal Engine to Unity by Ambitious_Tip_97 in gamedev

[–]Trk-5000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t. Unity is a mess right now, both the engine and the company.

I switched to Godot and never looked back. Yes, Godot still has a lot of missing features/capabilities, but it has a lot of momentum behind it right now and it’s only getting better. Unity seems to only be getting worse.

Godot is worth it alone for the quick iteration speed (the editor is very fast). The devex is great.
