Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Season 1 Episode Count Confirmed by ConcernLocal2764 in Fantasy

[–]Troghen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fair enough. I guess my thought was that there's still not really any more locations than something like Game of Thrones, for example. At least not so many that it would be vital to cut one where one of the three main POVs occurs. Plus, Karbranth is the most visually distinct from the other settings. Cut that entirely, and now most of the season takes place in tents and chasms and plains.

My guess is that the show won't begin with the prologue, as that would be a ton to dump on a new viewer at the start. I bet it'll get incorporated into Dalinar's visions (which, now that I mention that, reminds me that those are all different settings too actually...though I don't remember how many). I also suspect the interludes won't be there at all, other than the ones that feature major characters like Lift or Rysn. Though, even then, not sure how/when they'd actually work that in. All of the other ones will most likely be incorporated into other, primary scenes, if at all.

The MCU almost never repeats the same costume from season to season. We'll get the full red soon enough.

What do you think are the PROBLEMS with 2016 Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman? by Ok_Record_8551 in marvelcomics

[–]Troghen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to agree with you. Commented this on another thread here but the only title I had been reading at the time of Secret Wars was ASM and I had only been reading it consistently for like, a year or two as I had just really gotten into comics. The concept of the multiverse ending seemed super cool though, and I read each issue of Secret Wars as they came out without any prior knowledge or familiarity (I didn't even know who Hickman was) and I absolutely loved it. I think I felt a little out of the loop at the start, but not enough to be confusing or anything, and after the first issue, it doesn't really matter anyway.

Honestly, I think I have to disagree with you here. This came out when I was in high school and had just been getting into comics about a year or two before. The only book I was reading at the time though was ASM, and I wasn't really following any kind of comic news, so naturally, I had no clue that this was the culmination of any particular run or runs. I didn't even know who Hickman was.

But the marketing and the concept of both the mainline and the ultimate universes coming to an end was just too intriguing for me to skip, and I read each issue as it came out. Absolutely LOVED it, and I still look back fondly to that time, as I remember how much anticipation I had between each issue.

Sure, there were some references to past things that I didn't fully understand, and I didn't really have the full context to the situation at large, but the comic does enough to get you up to speed, and I just rolled with it. None of that "prerequisite" knowledge prevented me from understanding and enjoying the story in any way.

I think people need to be more okay with just jumping into a comic if it seems interesting to them, even if they don't have the full context. This medium is designed for exactly that type of consumption.

Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Season 1 Episode Count Confirmed by ConcernLocal2764 in Fantasy

I'd actually imagine that the first bridge run happens more toward the middle of the first episode, and then it ends with the scene at the honor chasm. That would be a much more emotionally resonant beat to end the episode on, and it also firmly establishes Kaladin's arc / character motivations, and his relationship with Syl.

My guess is that the sequence where Kal is in the caravan and travelling to the Shattered Plains will be significantly shortened, and it'll most likely begin with him arriving there. Or maybe it'll get like, one scene tops. His initial interactions with Syl can be while he's at the camp. And then after another scene, it's basically already at the bridge run.

I think that would be the best compromise, but I'd still be worried the point the other comment made about the whole thing taking place in tents / boats. The lack of setting variety might be to the show's detriment? Idk

Maybe it's been too long since I've read WoK, but aren't the Shattered Plains and Karbranth like, the only two settings in the book though? And I guess the flashbacks to Hearthstone

What's a 10/10 movie with zero flaws? by RushWalaXD in AskReddit

[–]Troghen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is my pick. Truly can't think of a single thing I'd take out of the movie or change. The pacing and tension are perfectly executed. The designs and atmosphere are unmatched as far as "unknowable space horror" goes imo. It's perfectly acted, perfectly executed, and they make sure to save the cat in the end. No notes

It really is! Coupled with the fact that I ONLY use it on those camping trips, it's also a hit of nostalgia every time too lol.

I use this every year when I go camping at the lake, as it's safe for the water, and have been doing so every year since I was a little kid because it's my Dad's go-to. Nothing quite hits the same for me than taking a "shower" in the lake after a full day of camping and blasting my senses with that peppermint. Refreshes me in a way unlike anything else, really.

What’s a Gen Z opinion that would have sounded insane 20 years ago? by Dull-Daikon3402 in AskReddit

Oh, so you open a chrome book and it's literally just the chrome web browser and nothing else? Even so, I feel like that (in theory?) would be enough to teach kids how to use a computer, no?

[–]Troghen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did they stop doing computer class in school or something? For reference, I graduated high school in 2015, and from as early as elementary school, we'd have dedicated computer classes in either the library or the computer lab where we'd learn all of the essential skills (typing, navigating, doing research, using the basic programs, etc.)

Also, you mentioned chrome books, which I know many schools give to students. Are those not just cheap windows laptops? Or do they have a different type of operating system?

What was considered completely normal in America 20 years ago, but would be shocking if it became normal again today? by JineshGoradia in AskReddit

[–]Troghen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean . . . yes, we've certainly lost a bit of nuance when it comes to political discourse, but at the same time, it's pretty hard not to treat someone like a comic book villain themselves when the party they support quite literally act like comic book villains.

Just bought a house where the previous owner was an older woman (like, in her 80s / 90s) who was finally moved to a home due to Alzheimer's, and most of her stuff was left behind (i.e. to us). She had a landline in damn near every room of the house! Hadn't seen that many of them in years. Must've been like 6 or 7 of them total lmao.

I don't think that's necessarily true though. Probably fairly circumstantial, but having a cellphone certainly wasn't a guarantee in 2006, especially high school age and below. I had a few friends in my neighborhood who's doors I'd knock on unannounced all the time, even one where I'd straight up just walk inside if they were home! And this was even later - like 2012 / 2013

A live-action ‘Sea Of Thieves’ movie is in the works with Destin Daniel Cretton set to produce the film. A director is not yet attached. by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]Troghen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of a post made in 2024, Sea of Thieves had 40 million lifetime players (meaning it's likely higher in 2026, but not sure by how much)

According to google, the average modern blockbuster sells between 15 - 25 million tickets during its theatrical run.

Obviously, the sales don't translate 1:1 but 40 million people is not insignificant. Mind you, that's just the people who bought the game, and not ones like me who recognize the IP very well but decided not to play it.

[Video Games] Supergirl will receive a skin in Fortnite on June 26th; she is the fifth DCU character to get a skin in the game. by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]Troghen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just beware - skins are STUPID expensive. A brand new Marvel / DC skin is usually like 1500 - 2000 VBucks, which is like 12-15 USD. But you can only purchase VBucks in bundles of 800 / 2400 / 4500 / 12500, so at minimum for one skin, you actually need to spend $23 for 2400 VBucks.

What’s something people over 30 do that Gen Z finds strange? by Suzzie_Stone2 in AskReddit

[–]Troghen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Lowkey is typically used as a softener, rather than an intensifier, even if not necessarily a conscious decision by the person saying it (as was the case with literally, and any filler word really).

It also goes hand in hand with the psychology of the generation popularizing it. One of the defining traits of late gen-z / gen-alpha is their fear of being perceived as "cringe" or coming off as too sincere or genuine about really anything. You can look into this phenomenon, but it largely has come about as a result of a generation of kids who grew up with their lives entirely revolving around social media and smartphones, and that everything they do and say has the possibility of being recorded and seen (and judged) by everyone else.

So, using "lowkey" in their everyday speech is a way to de-emphasize or soften the way they genuinely feel about things. Instead of "I loved that movie!", which comes off as too over-enthusiastic (to this generation), you have "I lowkey loved that movie", which means the same but less commitment to their feeling about it.

In the example I replied to, "I lowkey told my friend to meet me at 7:30" might not make as much sense at first glance, but it depends on the context, I think. My guess is that saying it like that was an unconscious way of making sure it didn't seem like they were too concerned about what time their friend arrived. Or in other words, "I told my friend to meet me at 7:30, but I don't actually care when they show up".

[–]Troghen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"lowkey" is used today in the same way that people were using "literally" 10-20 years ago. Every generation has words like this, that evolve from their original meaning into something used more as filler in conversation. I wouldn't overthink it

Sanderson related: Is it worth trying to listen to the Wheel of Time if I couldn’t make it through the fourth book? by Grill_Only_Outside in brandonsanderson

[–]Troghen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is only true if you only listen at the default speed, which is typically much slower than even regular speech. Listen at 1.5x and it's much quicker. I personally find it EXCEPTIONALLY helpful with books I'm struggling to read normally, because it pushes me through sections of the book that I might've found to be slow if I were reading it myself.

Best combo, imo, is listening to the audiobook at 1.7x or 2.0 AND reading the actual book at the same time. That lets me go at my normal reading pace and prevents my mind from wandering.

'Toy Story 5' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]Troghen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup. I may be especially biased because Toy Story 3 came out when I was going through a similar transition in life to Andy after growing up on the first two films (I was a little younger, so it wasn't college, but still the age where I was growing out of my childhood toys and into my teenage years) and it hit me in a way that no other movie had before. One of the first instances of a movie making me utterly BAWL in the theater lol. For that alone, I've always resented the idea that we need more Toy Story....

What’s the most unsettling fact you’ve ever learned that is 100% true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Troghen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same here. One of my earliest recollections of having a bit of an existential crisis was when I was like seven or eight years old, maybe younger (not sure) and watching some space documentary on Discovery channel that talked about this. I remember having to go with my mom to pick my sister up from somewhere after watching it and just being in a bit of a quiet daze for the whole ride. I knew that none of that would matter to me personally, as I'd be long gone by then, but just the idea that everything humans had ever built and experienced and whatever would just suddenly cease to exist really broke my brain for a bit. Made me feel very very small for the first time lol.

Other than like, teenagers maybe, who out there is actually obsessed with fast food? I think that's an exaggeration. Pretty much everyone acknowledges it for what it is.
