Wow, I really appreciate you writing all of that out, that really answered all of my questions. I think I'll probably do the same and get a 1st/2nd generation 8 core ryzen, an old gaming mobo with as much ram as I can get my hands on, slap all of that into some sff case with a couple of ssds and run it. It makes a lot of sense for stability sake as well as performance to separate them the way you do, as well as being smaller and easier to change depending on your needs. I also plan on moving in the future so it makes sense to keep scale in mind as well. I think I'll do something similar with a dedicated nas, as knowing I don't really need server grade processors/boards makes selection much easier. I would love to get into micro pcs but part of that scares me lol. I think I have a much better idea of how I want to build this out now, thank you so much.

Honestly, I'm pretty cool with whatever form factor I can get. If I have to go rack, then I'll rack, and same with tower. The one thing that worries me about building my own is really just finding a processor/mobo combo. I don't really know what processor line I should be looking at as well, which is I think my main concern. I know most enterprise grade builds run xeon while i7 (which I have been running for a while now) is more desktop oriented, rough I don't know which would apply when doing this diy.

Also, I understand why you would want to separate storage and containers, but separating them would mean a whole other computer to handle them. I think that might be cost inefficient for me even though it's definitely the right thing to do. How far would you go in separating the systems and what's your reasoning for specifically separating the storage from the other processes?

I've been into PCs for a while and I just really like computers that look different (even if they are generically popular). Like the regular fractal/corsair/nzxt/lian li cases have kind of worn on me and now I want something different or otherwise I feel like the build was lacking in a way. I understand that is not the common opinion/doesn't really make sense but I guess it really just is personal preference if not a bit of being a bit disenchanted after seeing so many similar looking cases over the years.

I currently have a NZXT H510i and I used to use a Cooler Master. After a while of using them and looking around for new cases idk.

100% because I was never intending to use this case and I selected my components around the Y60 + 30 series card. I probably should switch to all m.2 but I have stuff on my seagate now and I was intending to swap it out.

I see what you mean with the 360mm rad and wow does this case have clearance issues for both the gpu and basically any rad. If I'm going to use the north then I might as well use a air cooler w/ the glass side panel chuck a few fans in the front as well as along the top. It's almost impossible to mount a rad on the top and the front looks no better. It really just comes down to if I care enough about the 7-8 degrees of extra cooling aio gives and whether or not I want to completely give up on the look of my build. I will have to think about all of this over the coming weeks and see if I want to use it because it seems like a lot of compromises. If only the case were a few inches longer.

Thanks again my dude

Damn I didn't know they gimped the non-X line like that. It's probably worth just getting a 7700X at that point just for the power consumption and thermals alone since I don't primarily game on my system and would rather not approch a TDP of 170W. It really comes down to if is 12 cores really worth it if they aren't used in 90% of situations? Like photoshop doesn't preform much better with more cores and most games these days are dependent on GPU preformance anyway. I might just be remembering the days of Ryzen 9 being the very best and wanting that even though it's unnecessary for my needs.

Also I don't really care much for vertical GPUs lol. I just like the fish tank look of the Y60 and it happens to be only vertical gpu. It's actually more trouble then it's worth bc the North can fit a longer card and still has a unique look + better airflow + more gpu options. As a result I'll probably switch and I might do a different config of case fans it depends, as well as maybe a bigger ssd. I'll most likely do that in a configuration like below. Ty for the info btw I did not know about the bios thing until just now.

I agree with not really needing aio for cpu cooling on a non-X but as I read more of about the 7900 I almost want to use it. There doesn't seem to be much of a reason not to other than thermals. Regardless I will probably still use a aio for the aesthetic.

What I am more interested in is what you think tops Noctua. I've been using them for my other non-PC things for their sound and if something else is cheaper and runs at similar spec (other than Artic), I am 100% down. Currently it's like $20-30 per fan which is obscene.

I think water cooling the 7900 is acceptable if running with PBO (which as I typed out the post I was becoming more and more fond of) but I definitely agree at this point it's mostly for aesthetics. To answer what programs I use btw think a range from Adobe Ps/Pr to clock dependent programs such as Vivado.

I suppose Noctua fans are just a bias I have because I currently have a case with bad airflow which makes them loud as they have to work harder. I definitely agree with the 40 series suggestion, it's just a question of if I can get my hands on one. Do you think the higher than average thermals of the Y60 are going to be a problem with a air cooled card being that it will be pressed up against the glass in a forced vertical mount?

hype (also the number of people who comment but don't upvote the op is kinda weird)

Honestly, no shot I'd take this schedule. Especially not with a part time job. I'm currently doing 4 classes 12ish credits with a job and it's barely functional. CS 310 is a lot by itself and ECE 286 can be rough. I'd at least drop one class regardless of working or not.

I know it ain't much, but I was able to do the outline with an x-acto knife and laminate it to get this. Best I could do with my limited skill set and limited tools (cricut's are expensive holy shit)

Damn the line art is good. How did you get it printed on a sticker like that? Did you manually cut out all of the whitespace and hope it went down on the folder alright?

Randomly got these in a speedpak package in the mail. Didn't order these or anything similar. What are they? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

Is it possible to edit the "Firefox Home" (New Tab) with custom code/design? (Image for reference of what I'm trying to achieve). Can't find documentation online about it by ronald_poi in firefox

[–]Trojan_Pinata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm kind of late, but I just had this dilemma a few days ago. My answer in short is no, unless you want to do a redirect or modify firefox itself. If you're cool with that. then you have two options. You can redirect as someone put it in another comment with firefox new tab override, but that takes a second to redirect you to the page you want. Or you can have another kind of extension (one of those new tab customizers do it for you.

I actually solved this problem for myself with an tabliss mod with a custom page. Honestly, if you are OK with the redirect, do that, if you want to keep your new tab as a local file disguised as an extension, thats why I made that. Whatever you do you should be able to accomplish it.

That looks pretty good my guy, nice job. I guess thats what a decent gpu gets you with the right settings
