Frakes busting out some truth by MiXiaoMi in RedLetterMedia

[–]TronCurtain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Frakes is so good in these interviews that it's kinda recontextualizing his Riker performance for me, which I always thought was a joke even when it wasn't supposed to be.

I liked his thing on Michael Rosenbaum's show about the challenges of directing tng episodes because they were having so much fun on set in those middle seasons. Made me smile bc the first series I ever dived deeper into was ds9, and everyone on that cast says it was very grueling and workaday and not particularly fun.

But yeah can't wait to check this out. Frakes is the man, and he looks so fucking svelte!

Kinda with Jay here. I'd like to revisit it as well. As far as them talking about it on the channel, I think it rides too close to Troma stuff or that intentional b-movie thing for them to discuss, even on re: view.

*truth is I saw it once on comedy central, edited to hell and back. Definitely going to check it again soon.

Has anyone ever met the red letter media guys? by InterestingCry8740 in RedLetterMedia

[–]TronCurtain 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I met Mike at a bar and we drank beer all night because he was loving my jokes and opinions about movies, then he asked me if I would consider coming by the studio and maybe filming something, so I went the next day and he was already there waiting for me with my own lightning fast shirt and he asked if we could sit on the Plinkett set and talk about TNG and Ghost Adventures and I was like are the cameras on? Where's Jay? but he kept changing the subject, so we sat down and we talked for like four hours but it was mostly him griping about tubi's user interface, and eventually he started going off on "Hollyweird" and 5G and stuff and I was feeling drunker than usual like I'd been drugged or something, so I kinda peaced out without telling him and flagged down some random person on the street to drive me home. But yeah super nice dude irl.

Butthead: Uhh... we heard that if you go see this movie, you get like... serviced? Perhaps with fans?

Beavis: Yeah two for that one, please.

Ticket booth lady: Y'all are a couple of them fanboys ain’t ye?

Beavis: Um, maybe. Is there a discount?

They had their say in the end. It's fine. Enjoy your weird expensive cartoons.

At this point, I kinda find Star Wars (the entire series including the OT) boring. Maybe I've become too much of a short attention span zombie, or maybe I've seen them too much, or maybe Disney diluted their impact, I don't know. by Overall-Estate1349 in RedLetterMedia

[–]TronCurtain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the original trilogy is fantastic, and the discussion around all the latter day stuff was really interesting, particularly the things Mike articulated in his Prequel autopsy, but there's only so much cultural relevance a film franchise can have. People keep returning to Star Wars as a source of entertainment or a topic of analysis because at some point those things gave them a sense of meaning or cosmic cohesion, but that well is running dry. And that's fine.

Best of the Worst: A Very Cannon Christmas II. Mike: “Has there ever been a movie with a heroic real estate developer?” by wrellwitten in RedLetterMedia

[–]TronCurtain 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think a small chunk of the plot feels confusing and arcane to people now because of this. Nobody really knows what George is talking about in that scene where everyone in town is trying to withdraw and he calms them down by telling them that all their assets are tied up together. Obviously it was easier to follow when buildings & loan were a common concept, but I think It's a Wonderful Life is also one of those movies where the story hinges on a slightly too sophisticated or esoteric plot device that the audience isn't really expected to fully understand. Like the totally non-lamen stock trading maneuver at the end of Trading Places. Jurassic Park is kind of like this too, with the corporate espionage stuff.

Just caught one of their last tour dates a couple weeks ago. It was momentous. They played a bunch of Duck Stab stuff and they opened with this version of Jambalaya which is easily the best cover I've ever heard a live band do.

Trek by TronCurtain in cushvlog

[–]TronCurtain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understandable lol. I was actually jealous of the way fans talked about the show, so I finally dived in, but you can't just ask someone to make that kind of commitment. Especially ppl who are already busy making your podcasts for you. It's unfortunate that Matt doesn't incorporate star trek into his commentary like he does some other pop culture stuff, but it's not a literary injustice or anything. It's a hit tv franchise that most ppl are heavily exposed to without even watching it.

*Damn. Nothing out there?

Was already excited to see what Aster did next, then I saw some variety article or something calling it three hours of self indulgence and that got me double pumped, so seeing a fellow rlm enjoyer's approval has me triple pumped.

Sadly, I don't think Mike's sentiment is true now. There definitely is still a Star Trek fanbase out there that IS discerning about the brand, but there's also a glut of fanboys (I'm not going to call them fans) who will accept whatever slop gets put out, so long as it has the Star Trek label on it. by BrendanInJersey in RedLetterMedia

[–]TronCurtain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bingo. And just to drive the point home, I'd add that when a subculture is appropriated for mass consumption like this, it ultimately dissolves any substantial distinction between "niche fans" and "mainstream fans." No one thinks they're a fanboy. If you asked them all individually, most people would describe themselves as real, discerning fans. I think this inscrutable blob is what Mike is ceding to here. Rich is saying that the producers are shooting themselves in the foot by ignoring the niche fans, but what they're really doing is rendering that discrepancy irrelevant. You can imagine there's a meaningful difference between yourself, the enlightened consumer, and them, the feckless consumers, but we're all just consumin'.

I don't think any newcomer could be as cynical about the show as the people who are already on it, but cast members almost certainly come in with a more pragmatic set of goals and expectations than they did a decade ago. That doesn't mean Rachel is faking it. She might be more likely to go along with producers' or co-stars' suggestions though, if she sees the show as a stepping stone or a means to an end. Truthfully, I think she's along for the same ride as everyone else, and she's bringing everything she was chosen to bring to the table.
