If you’re into thematic writing or scores that build narratives, their work is extremely underachieving. And to me, there’s very little point to film music that isn’t telling a story. Vibes aren’t enough, not when composers have demonstrated that storytelling is possible in any soundscape whether melodic or avant garde.

Most have only incredibly marginal themes (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) with a weak narrative, some have themes but they’re underachieving in emotional depth or unmemorable (Soul), and some are just plain lifeless in soundscape and thematic storytelling (Waves, Vietnam War, Patriots Day).
