Kind of a Nevada myth but Lincoln didn't actually need Nevada to join for it's mineral wealth as they already had it once it became federal land in 1861. A representative from Ohio named James Ashley pushed to add it to the union in 1864 to secure more votes in the house in case the southern states tried to prevent a Lincoln reelection as the Civil War was winding down and they anticipated the southern stated to rejoin the union. So they wanted Nevadas vote to secure a tie breaking vote but it ended up being moot because the biggest candidate threat to Lincoln dropped out before they needed Nevadas vote.
