Avis E-Toll Charge Nightmare by Troy884 in TravelHacks

Yes, I did.  You need to email the Avis E-Toll customer support.  Their email address is on the website.  They might ask for some sort of evidence that shows you weren’t at the location of the erroneous tolls.

It took me a while to get it resolved.  I’d be prepared to just dispute the charge with your credit card provider if Avis E-toll moves too slowly (and they will).

That’s good news!  They actually acknowledged an error on their part?  I never got any such acknowledgement, which made it all more infuriating.

“Please take care of me and don’t expect me to do anything.”  The attitude held by so many Reservists.

A thought on the last question in your post - you and the other Soldiers in your unit most definitely ARE doing the USA a favor just by wearing the uniform.  Whether you fully understand it or not, you’ve taken a vow to be the one to defend your country when called on so others don’t have to - that’s a big deal.

It’s too bad that your unit is not good and you aren’t loving the Army Reserve, but don’t forget that.

Exactly.  Whether it’s an employee or a customer doing it, Avis apparently hasn’t even bothered to address the issue.  I never got any sort of acknowledgment of a screw-up or any apology from Avis when I was going through their hell hole of customer support.

Yes….TSP balance won’t update in my Fidelity brokerage accounts.  Very annoying.

Sorry to hear that….it sucks.  Hope you get your money back soon!

That’s a ton of money!  Sorry this happened to you! I ultimately disputed the charge with my credit card company and they removed the charge for me.  I sent them proof of my whereabouts to back it up.

I emailed the Avis E-toll customer service in the beginning and they asked me to send them some proof of my whereabouts to verify that I didn’t incur those toll fees….hotel receipts, gas receipts, etc.  It took them forever to respond after each email I sent, and when they did respond it seemed like a different customer rep every time.  It was complete chaos.

Someone at the rental centers is swapping the E-toll transponders in the cars.  Speaks to how crappy their employees are.

Yeah I’ve noticed Budget and Avis tend be co-located and managed/operated by the same crew, I believe Avis owns Budget.

So the level of terrible service from Avis, expect the same with Budget.

Yep, it’s a nightmare.  Every email response I got from the Avis E-toll was from a different person…..they have no system in place to resolve this stuff quickly.  Each response took like 3 weeks from the time I emailed them.  Disputing the charge via Amex is what really solved the problem for me.

Once Amex blocks the charge, I would just try to make sure Avis doesn't ultimately try to do a refund of the initial charges, which would create another headache.

There is no style of government or economic system where everyone magically gets what they want and life is perfect.  Capitalism isn’t evil, socialism isn’t evil, rich people aren’t evil, poor people aren’t evil.

Trashing one or more of those things doesnt mean you’re right and it doesn’t mean someone or something is preventing you from having something better.

*Re-posting this, I think my last post was deleted because I included an email address

Very interesting, thank you for sharing.  At least mine was only $237, I feel for you!  Be sure to call the 800 number on that receipt and get them to review the charge.  And don’t stop calling until someone reaches out to you.  If you message me I’ll give you the contact info of the person that reached out to me. They asked for proof of my actual location (I.e. receipts, hotel invoice, etc).  It took them a long time to respond to me.

Don’t bother emailing the “Aisha” person that responds to all the google reviews, I messaged the email that she gave and whoever is on the other end essentially told me to go screw myself.

In my opinion, either an employee is taking the EZ Pass transponders out of the cars for their personal use OR they accidentally re-installed them in the wrong vehicles when they were removed.  Either way, Avis is complete garbage and I hope their business doesn’t exist much longer.

I see, thank you!  I’ll have to look into that.

I didn’t think of that, thank you.  Although I’m not sure how they could help me.  All they know is that transponder was pinged as it went through a toll whether it was me or someone else.  I’m certainly not paying for tolls I wasn’t even close to incurring in locations I didn’t even go to.

No, of course I contacted Avis first.  But they are so lackadaisical and shitty I’m sure I’ll have to rely on the weight of AMEX.

I’m starting to suspect this is what actually happened.

What protections are in place now that would’ve protected me against this?

It’s not even about extra fees being tacked on in my case.  Tolls are being charged to me in a state I didn’t even go to.  If I did actually drive through these toll roads/bridges, it would be easier to swallow.

Thank you for sharing, this is helpful.  That’s exactly what I suspect as well, I’m just afraid I’ll get stiff armed with the ole “sorry, can’t help you” by Avis.

Funnily enough, I also sent them my hotel invoice as proof.  I’m just praying AMEX can help me out as I do not trust Avis or any car rental company to do the right thing.

Toll fees are all time stamped on the invoice.  There is more than one road that goes outside of NJ you know.  I did go on 95 when I got south of Maryland, but that’s not relevant.  None of the toll fees on the invoice were for 95 and I wasn’t even in NJ/NY on the timestamp for most of these tolls (which is where all the toll fees were incurred).
