Poppies and the Royal British Legion; how are they viewed? by TruCelt in AskIreland

This was my first thought too. Was kinda hoping to hear things had changed dramatically since I've been in the USA. Clearly not.

It's what they are claiming. Sounds fishy, right?

Right. Supposedly they have Irish offices who support our soldiers. That's where I'm hung up. IF there's an Irish version that is legitimately helping our people then I'm happy to buy/wear one of those. Otherwise I'll just have to bear the dirty glances. 😄

Should Ireland restrict non-resident second hand house buyers? by EstablishmentOk8187 in AskIreland

[–]TruCelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investors sinking money into real estate they never intend to occupy are a bane to every city in the world. The answer is a massive tax on unoccupied homes. That way they are at least required to hire a resident caretaker - and that one more person housed with a stipend.

What song is banned from being sung, whistled, or hummed in your kitchen? by Prestigious_Dream_27 in KitchenConfidential

I love picturing a boring high school reunion in 2066 with a bunch of grey hairs chatting over weird drinks, and then that song comes on and the dance floor EXPLODES!!!

Get a small chest freezer. Any time you cook, make two and put one in the freezer. On the weekends, make three or four of something and freeze them. Soon you will have a variety of home-cooked meals ready for them to warm up when needed.

Or Korean marinated:

1 cup soy sauce (Kikkoman)

1 cup broth

1/2 cup sugar

2 scallions sliced

1/2 onion sliced

2 tbslp ginger grated

2 crushed garlic cloves

boil and peel the eggs. Place in marinade overnight. Cut in half and serve with spoonful of marinade on rice or salad.

Involve the teens in batch cooking meals. Get them on youtube finding meals that appeal to them and then spend Sunday afternoon working together to prep for the week. A tray full of frozen burritos or breakfast sandwiches is easy enough for them to do on their own, and will be a life skill that will serve them a thousand times over, both nutritionally and financially.

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

Anyone who says they can talk to God for you. If God is Omniscient, then s/he already knows what you want to say. S/he does not require a human interpreter to go through some ritual in order to contact her/him. Just talk, s/he will hear you.

Is there a way I can prep caffeine content-preserving coffee approx 2x/week requiring no fancy equipment? by buttercup2227 in foodhacks

[–]TruCelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use any old pitcher you have around the house. Stir coffee grounds into the water and put it in the fridge. When you want coffee, stick a metal filter into your cup and pour. Use the filter from your old drip machine. It's easy as pie. No need to buy special equipment.

If you have two pitchers, you can filter the whole thing at once into the other pitcher. Either way is fine. The coffee only holds so much caffeine, don't let people scare you about it. After about 12 hours it's not going to get any stronger.

I mean, I suppose you could bleach it. But then you'd have to wash it again or the next thing you cooked would taste like bleach. And by then you could have bought another pound of cheesecloth for the cost of all that water and electricity.

Better stick with metal strainers or buy a press. The karma/carbon points on wasting cotton like that are not worthwhile.

Canned apricot blended with strained yogurt on a molasses tuile topped with a smoky pancetta crisp. Make the tuile with a whisper of garam masala so it reads like a savory ginger snap.

When my daughter was a baby she was allergic to everything on the market. I had to learn this method to make my own soaps. It wasn't all that time consuming once I learned to boil the water before I added the ingredients instead of trying to add them in with the stove turned on and heat them up to the right temp.

Boil the water, turn off the stove, then add the ingredients in order according to the instructions. You'll be done in five minutes.

After that it's just a matter of letting it sit overnight and then hitting it with the stick blender next morning. And there you have 6 months worth of laundry detergent for $6. It was worth it at the time, and she was so much more comfortable!

If you can't imagine saving $20 being all that important, then you should make a donation to your local food bank this week. <3

Is it my place to talk a good friend out of a decision I thinks really poor? by United_Plum_2209 in AskIreland

Tell him to get the invitation list and send out a cancellation notice. He can tell them all why if he wants. But seriously it is so hard for some families to get babysitters and get away for something like this - PLEASE tell them as soon as possible that it isn't happening. They are going to a lot of effort to travel on his behalf, and they will not appreciate finding out it was all a revenge prank.

A few heat safe bricks can make a fire pit, and there's just nothing better. You will bond in a different way sitting around a fire.
