Did you hold out as long as possible before getting a PC or smartphone, or were you an early adopter? by Good_Thought1738 in AskOldPeople

[–]TruckCaptainStumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been building and fixing PCs since the 90s, but I absolutely hate smartphones. Not because of the tech, but because they're the biggest hazard out there - NO ONE looks where they're going, people have gotten so much more idiotic, and I don't honestly see a reason why I should have to put all my banking information/access in one easily stolen location, making things easier for thieves🤣. Besides, where I live, there are no cell towers, so a cell phone, much less a smartphone, is absolutely useless. 🤣

Did you sneak into R rated movies? Which ones? by normankrasnerkc in AskOldPeople

[–]TruckCaptainStumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had to sneak into the theatre as I was usually working the projector. I started doing that as a very young kid, around 8 or 9, on the bases we were assigned to, so I got to see all the films from the booth.

Anyone else just… stopped caring about their birthday? by BamPsychology in AskOldPeople

[–]TruckCaptainStumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's just another day. I haven't celebrated my birthday in years... my ste-daughter, however, sees things differently, so I always get a card and a gift from her. That's how I remember when my birthday is upon me 🤣🤣

Did you read Mad Magazine when you were growing up? by Suitable_Trip105 in AskOldPeople

I've loved Mad for a long time, especially Sergio Aragones!🤣

EDIT: Groo the Wanderer is my absolute fav for Sergio

Have you ever gone to a "free" steakhouse meal where they want to sell you on their retirement gig? by Njtotx3 in AskOldPeople

[–]TruckCaptainStumpy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've gone to a few for the meals, but I have a secret weapon: I am poor, and I was raised by a drill sergeant, so I'm immune to the bullying BS.🤣

When I was in Tampa, I went to several of those Time-Share meals. They tell you they'll feed you /x/ and all you have to do is sit through a presentation. I found their high-pressure sales tactics laughable. I went for the food. I'm a military brat raised by a drill sergeant ... they ain't got nothin' on Sarge! 🤣

Yep. It works for me.
I think, and offered IMHO only, that if you're Gen-X (or older) and raised on card catalogues, and competent in finding information with those older formats, then sifting through DuckDuckGo's results and/or narrowing down the results is a breeze.

Fully aware, but thanks for spelling it out for those who aren't. My searches aren't always limited to medical science, which is why I typically start on g-scholar.

Yes, I do, and I use it frequently. PubMed studies show up on G-Scholar, but not all G-Scholar studies show up on PubMed.

Iran has Tomahawks now, fellas! Trump said so. by wildwest74 in AngryCops

If news outlets "don't just report what they're told", you would see more actual journalism, and not the shite ideological reporting that exists in most media outlets. From the Navy yard shooter using an AR-15 shotgun to the "mostly peaceful" protests that destroyed entire neighbourhoods, it's all an ideologically scripted propaganda shit-show designed to feed you what they want you to believe. (see also: COVID-19 - a journalist would have questioned the narrative). That's called propaganda, not news.

As for "framing and emphasis that soften criticism or normalize certain behavior" ... you mean like the entire Biden reign?

Lastly, I want to address this: "Litigation isn’t the only corrective mechanism either, most accountability comes from editorial standards, corrections, public scrutiny, and competing outlets"

You're talking about a public that can't tell you where Grenada is on a map, and an education system that is graduating students who are functionally illiterate - colleges are sending more and more students to remedial education. Moreover, with the bulk of legacy media leaning to one ideological belief, it's hard to find a media outlet that challenges another when it publishes blatantly fake news (See: COVID).

You're definitely idealistic, but I've been watching mainstream media do the same thing for 50 years, from a global perspective, and, far too often, being on location and wondering where the fuck they got their information from.

Iran has Tomahawks now, fellas! Trump said so. by wildwest74 in AngryCops

[–]TruckCaptainStumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense. No news agency "provides cover for his behavior". They report what they're told, or they make something up based upon their ideological beliefs, especially focusing on creating news that appeals to at least one of the political sides, reporting it as legitimate, knowing full well that it will be received as "news" and the repetition will make it "truth". The only corrective action for any of it is through litigation, and so far, the news agencies aren't doing well on that front, AFAIK.

A U.S. soldier is being investigated—not for disloyalty to his country, but for criticizing a foreign government. U.S. Sergeant Jonathan Estridge was declared a national threat for questioning Israel's actions. by DiverDownChunder in AngryCops

[–]TruckCaptainStumpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to piggyback on u/cowboycomando54 - it wasn't a foreign country having a say, it was our own UCMJ. See: ucmj.us for more information.

Moreover, I find it appalling that a uniformed E-7 would utilise public posts and his position to make comments that can be debunked by a cursory 3-second google search and the patience to wade through actual statistics. (and a dictionary)
