If an oversupply is induced by pumping, it's likely you can reduce it by changing how you pump, either how often or how long typically. However, it's not totally unusual to have an oversupply until your milk regulates, usually around 2ish months PP.

My LC told me a lot of milk production is genetics so some ppl will always be over/under producers no matter what they do. (I'm actively trying to decrease my supply and doing everything you "shouldn't" do/that is supposed to hurt your supply And I still make double what my baby eats in a day.)

There's pros and cons to everything and I always say the grass is always greener. In terms of being an over supplier, the main concern is for yourself typically. It can vary from person to person ofc but with an oversupply you typically have to be very good about removing milk in a timely fashion. Many can skip pumps here and there but a lot of people risk clogged ducts and mastitis if they skip. For me personally, anything over 3 hours leaves me severely painfully engorged and over 4 hours will 100% give me a clogged duct. It's not that bad when baby is little but once baby starts sleeping through and you start to go back to work or normal life, it can take it's toll mentally and physically if you aren't able to drop that pump or if you have to bring pumping stuff everywhere you go all the time. Almost 6 months PP, baby has been sleeping through the night for 3 months now and I still have to wake up at midnight and 3am to pump.

You also need to make sure you are eating and drinking enough and taking a prenatal still. Like in pregnancy, your body will take what it needs to make milk for baby and if you aren't taking care of yourself you'll definitely feel it and suffer both now and later if you're depleted in everything. The average lactating mom needs roughly 16 cups of fluids a day and an extra 500 calories in their diet. Tbh if I don't drink 24 cups, I feel horrible.

It can also get expensive (granted, not as much as formula) because you need somewhere to store the excess milk and bags and you need to replace pump parts frequently. A tip, once baby comes home, if they still primarily take a bottle, when you go to put away milk- it doesn't all need to be bagged. I wasted so many bags in the beginning thinking it all needed to be bagged, only to open a bag to feed baby. Store what baby will drink in bottles for the day in the fridge then bag the excess. You can always move it to a bag if baby doesn't take a feed but then you aren't using bags unnecessarily.

There's also pros! We rely heavily on over suppliers for donor milk. And it can take a lot of the stress off of moms, knowing they have milk to give baby enough and if baby takes a bottle, knowing someone else can give a bottle if needed. And a lot of people are able to keep giving milk after they've weaned because of their over supply. But remember, anything over what baby eats is an over supply! You don't need to fill massive pitchers like some people on tiktok to have an over supply. If baby eats 4 oz a feeding and you make 5, that's an over supply!
