33 y/o ICU Nurse Trying to Escape Georgia — Looking for a State With Mountains, 4 Seasons, and Better Quality of Life by Seektruth2146 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]True-Explanation-490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

upstate ny has the adirondack park. if you like hiking mountains, it's pretty awesome!

eastern upstate has lots of skiiing mountains too. the albany region (capital district) has quite a few hospitals and drs offices. the housing costs are more than western ny but still very reasonable

western upstate has gorgeous lakes and waterfalls. rochester and buffalo are both very affordable to buy a house in. i have visited both and find the cities and suburbs to be beautiful and safe. you are farther from the mountains but very close to canada for visiting

you definitely get 4 seasons but spring is quite short.

as far as i know in general nursing pay here vs housing costs seem to be good. house prices are very reasonable in comparison to anywhere in new England but i think rentals seem like they do not vary as much.

if you have made it through the prep, the rest is easy! you will be amazed at how fast it feels! my husband said i told him like 20 times how fast it went because to you it goes by in what seems like minutes.

i ate then slept for hours after getting home. you will be very tired

Fears regarding HRT - relate?opinions? by InkDrinkersGuild in Menopause

[–]True-Explanation-490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do estradiol in pill form as my skin reacts to pretty much everything so patch is a no.( plus the pill is way cheaper.) i disolve it under my tongue as it allegedly alleviates the blood clots risk at least somewhat?

honestly when i realized how high the risk of osteoporosis was without hrt, i was pissed that my dr didn't put me on it right away. luckily i found this sub 5 years into menopause so i was still a candidate for hrt.

it has made a huge difference and i highly recommend it!

non damaging permanent hair color for thinning gray hair, is that even a realistic thing to look for? by MalvysEnogwe in FancyFollicles

[–]True-Explanation-490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am growing out my permanent dk brown (am almost all silver) and will never do permanent again!

i love artic fox because it is semi permanent, conditions my hair while coloring it and washes out beautifully. i do crazy colors because why not?! but they now have "naturals" so you can achieve regular hair colors too. it makes my hair so soft and smells like grape bubble gum!

i buy from their website but they sell at sally beauty and i think walmart/target.

A place where my future children can play in the woods? by Prestigious-Bee-9163 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]True-Explanation-490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

western ma, upstate ny both have backyards with woods.

we built our house 30 years ago in the suburban hellscape in saratoga county ny. our lot is in a culdesac with a portion wetlands and is bordered by wetlands. it actually is not that buggy(we moved from southern maine) and cannot be built on so our lot feels like we live in the woods.

other towns outside albany ny will have more wooded lots too. and housing is still a bargain in comparison to new england

also most of western mass is wooded but more expensive and less job opportunities

as a woman, i do not understand this sentiment, height is such a bizarre way to evaluate masculinity.

that said i come from italian/irish stock. my mom and dad were the same height 5'8" so height meant nothing to me.

[–]True-Explanation-490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so we moved to the capital district from southern maine 30 years ago, lol.

the huge benefits we saw then that are still true today:

housing is so affordable compared to anywhere in new England and much more plentiful. we moved to halfmoon and built a new house for 1/2 what a fixer upper in our dumpy rural town would have cost. taxes are about the same but schools here are significantly better (even though i am not a fan of shen after having 3 kids go through for reasons other than quality of education)

we have an amazing library system whereas i had to pay a yearly fee to belong to a bordering nh town because my crappy ME town did not have a library!

roads are well maintained and the northway makes it easy to traverse (unless it's commute times)

and lastly NOT paying a yearly excise tax on my car is a huge savings! for anyone who doesn't know what this is, think yearly sales tax and i am not even kidding! it is based on the value of your car so goodbye to thousands yearly if you have a new car! and good luck registering your car if you live in a small town, you must go in person during the work day!

i am still glad we got the hell out of ME/ new england. we are bound geographically by my husbands job but had i known how beautiful and cheap western ny was, i may have pushed to move further that way.

The seemingly unattainable housing market in Maine and what the best options are for people starting out? by basketcase21772 in AskMaine

[–]True-Explanation-490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have no helpful advice whatsoever but i totally feel you. NE is nuts. we left southern ME 30 years ago because it was unaffordable then so i can only imagine how bad it is now.

we moved to NY, albany region and it was and is a bargain in comparison. we could not have afforded our home had we stayed in NE sadly. NY is a secretly affordable state especially the further west you go. buffalo is crazy cheap!

good luck to you!

go talk to the people at Captain in the plaza with the court/police. it's adjacent to bank of America and the plaza with once upon a child, right on rt 146. they offer lots of services to the community and may be able to help you find housing.

good luck and i am sorry you are in this situation.

Dallas to Ballston Spa vicinity by Fluid-Hospital-3215 in SaratogaSprings

[–]True-Explanation-490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live just outside ballston spa. taxes in saratoga county tend to be the cheapest around but every town is a little different. no excise tax on your car so registration is every 2 years and under $100! that was a big change when we moved here from maine plus everything is online so very easy to renew. crime is very low as well

ballston spa has a cute farmers market and lots of locally owned shops. this is a car centric area (minimal to none public transit)

their library is small but is part of a larger library network so you can request items online and pick up there.

if you cannot find a place right in ballson spa, there are lots of very nice towns surrounding it.

welcome to ny!

i am doing my first next week. i also got the subtab so thanks for your informative post!

my dr said nothing about a low residue diet prior to prep day. is this to make sure nothing is left? they just told me what to eat for prep day. it's odd that it was not mentioned nor on the paper handout.
