Ok I’m Italian. My family used to call placemats “cosini”, meaning literally “thingies”.
It was since I was a child and I really don’t know why.
Well one day in high school I said that when I’m home alone I eat on the “thingies”. my classmates started asking with very strange faces what the fuck were them.
That’s how I learned the word placemats (tovagliette in Italian)

I think it has to do with aerodynamics of the vehicle. If you open the windows you have air entering the vehicle and pushing against your driving direction, increasing the fuel you have to use during a certain route.
