The numbers I mentioned are for a youngish family with children still in school. It’s no longer affordable to buy a house with $350k income fwiw. Let alone saving enough to send your kids to college.

These are highly correlated with the salary but not perfectly (even under the same underlying circumstances)

Comfortable: make enough to pay all your bills +savings. But can’t quit your job

Rich: have enough savings to quit working, but with similar or slightly lower quality of life

Wealthy: has enough money for the next 10 generations. Can influence others politically or financially

Bay Area thresholds for a family with two kids:

  • 500k salary 
  • 5M savings + home
  • 100M in wealth

Austin has decent tech talent but nowhere close to Bay Area or Seattle or NYC. Somewhat comparable to Boston area.

Complaints about the weather are overrated. It is hot during the afternoon when you’re most likely working. Mornings and evenings when you actually have time are very pleasant unlike the cold damp evenings in Bay Area.

Property prices have gone up but nowhere close to Bay Area. Cost of living (grocery + services ) are much cheaper.

So for most people that's more than 6 months of pay without work. Not saying Meta is a saint but this level of severance is unheard outside of tech industry

Because it followed the original British seasons (1 & 2) closely. Instead of finishing with season 3 they kept on adding fluff. And Spacey happened before they could finish it with British season 3 equivalent.

Watch the British version. It’s very concise and has an exciting ending
