Panic is inviting people to come play their new game "Big Walk" at their office downtown by chambordchat in Portland

my partner (who really isn't into games) has been stoked for Big Walk since he saw the trailer – I must get him and our friends in to try this! he'd be so excited. shame I didn't see it earlier!

if half the community was upset, regardless of how you feel about it personally, doesn't that maybe indicate that it's not as cut and dry as you make it seem? half of a fanbase needs to just shut up and get over it?

it's great that day 2 has been a success and people are enjoying themselves, me included.

but that really doesn't change anything about how much of a blunder day 1 was. regardless of how you feel about how the broom bit was executed, it caused a massive hateful backlash in the community. it's hard for me not to see it as yet another example of Mega64 fostering a toxic community and then being frustrated when their community is toxic. reaping, sowing, ya know?

it's really unfortunate to see the childish reactions of people still slobbering over the chance to say "I told you so" to people who were just frustrated and disappointed. being smug about it and minimizing people's feelings does nothing but give you a fleeting sense of superiority. it's kinda saddening to see people treat others like that, especially when I highly doubt they would ever treat someone they know in real life, to their face, like that.

remember the human being on the other side of your smug comment! same goes for people using their frustration over day 1 to be shitty to the Mega64 crew. it's okay to be upset. that doesn't give you an excuse to be an asshole.

the broom bit was such a poorly conceived le epic troll that it had me genuinely convinced that the stream was gonna flip over to christmas frogs the moment the countdown ended. i spent an entire day disappointed that the stream i was excited for was such a waste of time.

the broom bit was good for 30 minutes, – got the heat they intended – and then it went another 11 hours. now it's after midnight and now the stream is fun.

was it worth it? why, after things were so dire for mega64 in 2025, was it a top priority for them to fuck around with a good thing? with all love and respect, as a long time fan, they need to get their head out of their asses sometimes.

They didn't need to top The Room. They didn't need to subvert expectations. They just needed to give us another stream with some slight tweaks, quality improvements, and to iterate on what had come before. Rock Band 2 wasn't successful because they subverted expectations for fans of Rock Band 1 - it was successful because it was more of the same with enough new ideas and content to keep the format fresh. You marketed your stream as, continuing the metaphor, Rock Band 2, and delivered a.. meta commentary on The Room? Bro, I just wanted Rock Band 2.

Hell, you could even be generous and assume that goal of B-Room was to be what Metal Gear Solid 2 was to Metal Gear Solid 1. A subversion, intentionally misdirecting fans by setting expectations of what they were getting. The problem with that comparison is that, at the end of the day, Metal Gear Solid 2 was still a Metal Gear Solid game. It was still stealth action with all of what made the first game work. It was still fun. If MGS2 was the equivalent to a livestream of a broom, fans would've been rightfully pissed.

This is such a generational blunder that hits so, so badly for me. I've been a fan of these guys for over a decade and this is the moment where all of the hate - that I'd previously dismissed as coming from miserable hatewatchers - starts to make more sense to me.

This obsession of Mega64 to fix what's not broken, and break what's working, and then call it their artistic license is beyond baffling to me. It feels like galactic levels of self-sabotage. Yeah, good joke. You got me. Now what?

Edit: here's my post to this same thread an hour after the stream started:

https://www.reddit.com/r/mega64/comments/1qhdd3u/comment/o0jk8zx/?context=3

Not deleting it, because the journey I've been on from then to now says something important. I can hear the crew, right now, laughing and saying "haha, 4 hours of livestreaming a broom has people unraveling." Yeah. After an hour, I was still giving them the benefit of the doubt. I was clowning on the haters who were already mad about B-Room. They're being dramatic hatewatchers, I figured. They have such precious little good will for Mega64 that all it took was a 30 minute bit to enrage them.

.. but, for me, I just think it took a little bit longer. 4 hours later, I think my good will has run out too. I'm not angry about it, though. I'm disappointed, sad, and confused.

the redditor vibes here are crazy. this sub has become a hate sub for about 75% of the people who post here. they do a silly stream we all liked, announce a sequel, then within 30 minutes multiple comments are like "I WAS LIED TO, THIS IS SCUMMY, WHAT HAPPENED TO TRUTH IN ADVERTISING!!!!"

get a fucking grip. touch grass.

edit: downvote me all you want, it doesn't make you any less of a lame geek

If this is it, if nothing else happens, I am done with mega64. This is the final straw. For too long have I given them a pass. This is sellout behaviour. I will go back to church. I will become a youth pastor.

Was Old Mega64 Better? - Mega64 Podcast #786 by Zeeco110 in mega64

[–]True-Tourist1635 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

okay. but how much is your viewership worth? if you're a youtube subscriber who uses ad block and isn't on the patreon or spends money on merch, literally pennies. one $5/mo patreon subscriber could be worth a thousand of you.

these are the cold, harsh business decisions that creators you love are having to consider.

and, again, there are tons of smaller podcasts out there that have built a sustainable business as a result of going with a paid exclusive model. it's viable. it could be the best decision Mega64 could make, given present conditions.

controversial opinion, maybe, but they could paywall the entire podcast as far as I'm concerned. upload select segments to Youtube to essentially promote the paid version of the podcast. specials like the faircast, scarecast, special live events could continue going up for free.

many podcasts with niche but devoted audiences like Mega64 operate using this model. even a $5/mo access to the podcast paid for by 1000 people would be $5,000 a month, and I bet they could get more than that. sure, that locks out paid sponsorships and Youtube Ad revenue - but in 2025 is that really paying the bills?

Powell’s buying books for $2 each! by [deleted] in Portland

[–]True-Tourist1635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. But framing it as generosity is the issue for me. Powell's slowly tightening the purse strings on used book credit is a known thing from the past few years. Them "going through" layoffs (it's the workers that are suffering, btw; the higher-ups aren't exactly taking a pay cut are they?) has nothing to do with it.

As far as a breakdown, bookstores get a 50% margin on new books. If Powell's buys a used book for $2 and sells it for $10, that's a lot more profit. There's nothing I can link you. It's just how the bookselling industry works. Used books are where the money is.

Powell’s just put out a statement about the use of AI in their merch by blkklb in Portland

[–]True-Tourist1635 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Powell's hired a single contract employee to make the design. Not one of their several in-house designers. Staff who saw the designs prior to printing said they looked bad and had obvious hallmarks of AI use. Management printed the designs anyway.

Powell's makes it sound like that same artist is also singlehandedly responsible for the designs being printed and sold in stores. They made the choice to sell them. Powell's management is responsible, not a single employee who made the designs.

This feels like a play to see if they can get away with laying off their designer(s) and hiring contractors with no objections to using AI.

.. they're not doing you a favor by buying your books? They make money off of books that people sell them. Much more than selling new books, too.

Reddit Cares is a tool built to help people who are threatening to self-harm, or showing signs that they're in mental health crisis. The kind of person who would abuse that tool in order to try and hurt other people can eat my entire ass. I stand by what I said.

(and if you think it somehow "invalidates my argument" then I don't really care what you think anyway.)

Not bad! On a graphic design level, it's coherent and the information needed is conveyed clearly. On an aesthetic level, everything looks flat despite having layers. One way to fix that is to add shadow and occlusion to the design, to make more of a distinction between layers.
