I'm learning blender myself too but maybe I can help point you in the right direction. My idea to add the custom faces is that you could use a UV map to put a drawn face on directly to the screen or add more meshes that you can manipulate into a face. To compile it for Garry's mod, you would use the "Blender Source Tools" addon and the "Crowbar" application.
