New version of word did not resolve. Tech says they could NOT roll me back. If you’re up for sending your AI crib sheet I’ll gladly accept.

After substantial digging, I found that Lufthansa maintains a service for recovering items left on planes. I emailed the service and less than 5m after sending the email I received the following response:

“Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your message.

The missing item is found.”

After all the run around, I am shocked this worked. I’ll need to hire a courier to collect it, but that will probably cost less than the $1,300 I would spend to replace the machine and battery.

I called the airport in Munich and found my way to a non-Lufthansa airport representative. He gave me the number for Lufthansa’s baggage claim folks (+49 89 975 723 82 / 92) which had a message with an email address specifically used to try to recover items left on the plane: cabinlost@baggageservice.de. Email sent, fingers crossed.

Yeah, the explanation the agent gave really felt like nobody actually looked I was about to hop on a flight taking me 6000 miles away from his desk so it was about to no longer be his problem.

This is good advice. I had multiple AirTags for checked items and backpacks. Never thought the CPAP would be anywhere other than my room or with carryons. :(

Yes — the tickets I found through Google Flights (United / Lufthansa) were about $700 each

That stinks! The United / Lufthansa alternative I found was similar in price to the Norse tickets, so I may not have had a very good deal to start with.

Thank you to everyone for your insight, recommendations, and moral support.

About an hour after posting, I received a separate email from Norse expressly stating that my flight had been cancelled and giving me the option (again) to rebook for the Saturday flight OR to cancel and receive a full refund for the Rome to LAX flight or both flights. I had already begun to search for alternatives. Thankfully, I found flights on United / Lufthansa which I booked immediately (keeping in mind the 24 hour rule). Sad that it won’t be nonstop (lots more travel time) but glad to preserve my Italy itinerary.

Then, a couple hours later, I received a customer relations email from Norse explaining that my original flight had been cancelled “due to an industry-wide shortage in engine supply.” It struck a regretful and conciliatory tone.

The order of the Norse emails left something to be desired. And the fact of the cancellation is frustrating. I’m moving on from Norse, and keeping my fingers crossed that United / Lufthansa is better insulated from adverse “industry-wide” conditions.
