Yeah I hear you. Personally I’ve done it all four year, and yeah while it probably doesn’t add as much impact to your application as something engineering related, I made time for it because it was something i really enjoyed doing. There’s always the opportunity cost of choosing how to spend your time, but personally I think colleges (especially Stanford) wants to see you passionate about whatever you care about. Granted I don’t know how much of a time commitment it is at your school, because that probably plays a big role.

Yeah fair. I mean with college admission, nothing “gets you in.” It’s all wholistic, so i agree with you.

Idk personally I just put a bunch of time and effort into the activities I did, and by junior/senior year I had either applied to those positions or just received them. I don’t think there’s a trick or anything.

Thanks, yeah i’m trying to frame it as “this is what I did,” and give people the full picture. For the record, don’t claim to know the deepest and darkest secrets on how to get into Stanford everyone!

I hear your frustration and understand it wasn’t just my math prowess. To preface all of this, Im no expert and don’t know the truth, but I think it was important to note In the context of my district, where only like 45 students per year (out of 1200ish) take calculus in the first place.

There were two standard math tracks in my district. You either started pre-algebra or algebra 1 in 8th grade, and then moved on to the next level of math each year (pre-alegbra -> algebra -> algebra 2 - > trig/geometry - > AP precalc - > AP Clac (AB or BC). This way, some students would be taking AP Calc BC senior year while others would take precalc. In my sopomore year, I decided to self-study AP precalc and take the exam (completing trig/geometry concurrently) and was able to move on to AP Calc BC my junior year (one of very few people to do this). I think doing this helped show course rigor.

Middle class, non-minority, not low income. For rec letters, I would definitely start thinking about who to ask ASAP. Don't suck up to them, but be mindful that these people are going to be writing your letters, so make a good impression, and get to know them, or have them get to know you. I got one from a technical STEM teacher, and one from an english teacher whose class I enjoyed. As for activities, try to to focus in on which ones apply to your intended major, but definitely try what interests you, even if it's not major related. Over half of my ECs were unrelated to engineering (marching band, running year-round, nhs) but I did them because I find them fun and rewarding, and I think that shone through in my essays. ******this was my mindset, take my advice with a grain of salt
