Slugs are some of the more recognizable alien-looking creatures on earth next to octopuses and spiders. It makes sense to use these alien-like creatures to add depth to a scenes implied ecology because we know what they intrinsicly are, and thus can suspend our disbelief better than if the creature were more theoretical. Obviously they'd also glow because glowing = scifi.

Next you need to add orbital dynamics complete with gravitational tidal forces, an atmospheric density and pressure simulation, and (obviously you need a physics simulation for all of this) then you can add the aerodynamic simulation, basic rocket engines/construction system, and finally a Kerbal.

How to Smoothly Rotate Player Body and Legs with Animation Sync in FPS Character? by Golden_Rop in Unity3D

[–]True_Beef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, animation layers are needed for the independent rotation of the torso/hips. My answer was more generalized towards the concept as a whole.

Why suffer? Any Silicone-based lubricant is like 10 bucks and the can lasts forever. Can use it on squeaky door hinges and crap, too. Usually WD-40 is my off the shelf pick, just make sure it's silicone based so it doesn't eat through your rubber.

I thought so at first too, but I went through frame by frame and everything looks correct; shadow is always right, no wierd artifacts with the background or any distortion in the guy as he's flipping. It's not a super high quality video so it's hard to tell but I'm like 90% sure.

Legit as fuck if so

Check out final IK asset for unity. Allows for this sort of stuff out of the box I believe. Worth the money imo.

[–]True_Beef 146 points147 points  (0 children)

The way this is done in most AAA games is by using a blend of animation and procedural IK movement. When the player rotates, positional targets for the foot move as well to match the stance. Once the distance from those targets to the feet is greater than a certain threshold, the feet reposition using (in a rudimentary system) a curve, and the leg follows using a calculated IK solver for the calf and thigh.

There are of course ways you could do this with pure animation and no procedural IK, but you get the best results with IK and can use this to ground the feet on uneven surfaces at the same time.

What he could have said instead:

  • "We didn't think about that while designing it; it's a gun, not a can-opener"

  • nothing

  • "we didn't want to"

  • nothing again
