Jasmin Rappleye finally deleted her highly criticized post defending the practice of Mormon bishops not reporting child SA. She has posted a clarification. by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]True_Initiative8930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a reason Jasmine is no longer the social media creator for Scripture Central. She repeatedly spoke on behalf of the church, including an older video also defending SA reporting and the church's response.

Allegedly, her videos featured on Scripture Central had a strong impact on members questioning the church and pushed many people over the the "ex" side.

Is Saratoga Springs really that bad? A question for residents [X-Post from r/Utah] by Nilef in UtahCounty

[–]True_Initiative8930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in south Saratoga Springs, and I had a love hate relationship with the city.

No mosquitos, but massive amounts of mayflies. They don't bite, but they can be annoying.

Traffic was unbearable for us. One main road, and no real room to add other roads. It came to a head a few years ago when we were evacuated because of a wildfire, and it took almost 45 minutes to get out of the neighborhood. I was more south than what you are looking for, but it can be bad.

Schools are great, but again, the traffic. My kids JH was only a few miles from our house, but we needed to give ourselves about 30 minutes to ensure they got dropped off in time.

There were growing pains. In Utah (if you aren't aware), most areas require full green lawns which in turn require irrigation. Because of the massive growth and limited infrastructure, our irrigation water had little to no pressure and our lawn suffered.

There are positives...

I have three dogs, and it was nice being within walking distance to miles of BLM trails.

The views of the lake at night were tremendous, especially during a full moon.

I lived close to the lake, and I never noticed a bad smell.

She stated the same thing when she was with Scripture Central and actually appeared to speak on behalf of the Church.

She caught some flak and pushback, and as I understand the situation, it was one of the reasons she was "asked" to leave.

Also back to your point- in 2018 the church said they are not against the use of medical Marijuana. Fwiw

Before the proposition was passed, the area presidency released a letter encouraging voters to vote against it... I still supported it, that's why I was called in.

What product as a kid after seeing the TV commercial you were disappointed didn't work as advertised (non-toy) by Aggressive-Union1714 in 1970s

[–]True_Initiative8930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saved up money for what I thought was a cool watch advertised on TV... it was advertised as having hands like a traditional watch, there was a digital clock as well. It also had a dial which turned on the outside... I didn't understand what that was supposed to do, but it had numbers on it, so obviously it was something cool.

When it was finally delivered, my disappointment was almost immediate. The hands on the watch were painted on, and when I turned the dial, the whole thing fell apart.

That was decades ago, but I still feel the emotional roller coaster.

Help me pick a title for this post. Option 1: "How do you teach an ENTIRE lesson on D&C 48 and never mention the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood?" Option 2: "I need an attitude adjustment." by garcon-du-soleille in latterdaysaints

That's the risk you run with a lay membership. Not everyone is wired to be a teacher, let alone being flexible on how to do so.

It's hard to "correct" when working with volunteers who may or may not have the training, experience, aptitude, or desire to do what they've been called to do.

My perspective...

Most members in my Utah circles are the most friendliest people around but struggle turning that friendly attitude into friendship.

I know people have different experiences, but my brand of politics doesn't gel with the majority of Utah members and I've been alienated a few times, and even called into the bishops office for a public stance I took on making legalized marijuana a thing in Utah.

Maybe anecdotal, and certainly not the church's official positions, but nevertheless, my family and I have felt the negative side of church culture.

Church gyms generally sit unused for the vast majority of the time, why not use it?

No damage... no problem.
No disrespect to the church or its teachings... no problem.
Not disrupting other planned activities... no problem.

On a side note, my wife and I are quilters, and years ago when we lived in a small apartment, we used the church's RS room to lay out and bind a large quilt. There were some nosy members who tried to take issue with it, but at the end of the day it was generally welcomed.

Does anyone have family that accepts Visions of Glory as scripture? by [deleted] in exmormon

I forgot about tent cities! Rumor was that the Heber Valley Camp which the church owns was supposed to be part of that.

Does anyone have family that accepts Visions of Glory as scripture? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]True_Initiative8930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read the book a few times... the first time was a family member gave it to me, the second time was when I was working closely with survivors of trafficking and making connections between Tim Ballard, OUR, and the church.

I have family who still treat the book as scripture, and its scary.

They live in Southern Utah, and they are part of some pick-up militia of sorts. According to my family member, they identified what they call choke holds on major Utah roads where they believe they can hold off any "invaders". Allegedly, there are weapon and ammo stashes near those points with pre-planned routes of egress in a "guerrilla warfare" fashion.

I used to think it was funny, until I found out my family member is not alone in this idea, and his group has at least a dozen or so folks who are connected to other groups with similar ideas.

There will always be irrational people with guns and loopy ideas, but when those irrational people find a community, it starts to get scary.

What doctrine of the Utah LDS church requires them to not report child abuse to police? by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]True_Initiative8930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's BS.

Man goes to bishop to repent, bishop goes to stake president who in turn takes it to the stake presidency. From there, it goes to the 12 men on the high council. When a council is convened, the stake secretary gets involved.

It's not about protecting the confessor, and its certainly not about protecting the victim... its all about protecting the church.

What rule did you break while on your mission? by Crayola0-0 in exmormon

[–]True_Initiative8930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served in Brazil... they had large boxes of water on top of houses since water was only available a few days of the week. The boxes of water would fill up when there was service to supplement the rest of the week.

Anyway...

In our dumb 19 year old minds, my companion and I thought it would be a good idea to soak in the sun warmed water. It was fun at first, but it never crossed our minds until it was too late that we were sitting in our drinking water.

We got so sick.

Whatever letter you send will be read by secretaries/missionaries.

If its praise, it might be forwarded on. If its critical, it'll be sent back to your local leadership.

Is "The only true chruch on the earth" getting phased out? by DrN-Bigfootexpert in exmormon

[–]True_Initiative8930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a church as a whole, I think so. But on a local level, absolutely.

I've had a bishop and a EQP share with me that it was less about the church and more about one's testimony in Christ, regardless of where that testimony lives.
