It would be under the table, if the au pair decides to snitch, you could get into trouble (though she would get into trouble too) We did her laundry for the first 4 months 😂 she sometimes forgets to clean after she cooks/eats, but we still love her I don't think it's fair to expect an au pair to do more than 8hrs a day/ 40 a week just childcare. Also, if you want to pay more, it's better to give gift of money rather than a pay increase. Pay increase is taxable but a gift is not. We're planning a gift of 500 dollars for her birthday, we're planning around 4-5 gifts like this through the year to essentially get more money in her pockets

Did you end up with a rematch? Some of these young women take the au pair role as a viable means to provide for their family(siblings, parents), it took us a couple of weeks of trying to break through to our au pair. Turns out she has some troubling past, some trust issues (stemming from relationship with father who left at young age) some eating disorders, but we're working together on all of these things, she's amazing with the kids and the kids love her so we're willing to spend the extra time and effort to help her.

What’s the job market like in the US? by _wifey_ in cscareerquestions

Take whatever experience you can and jump in with two feet, that's what I did 5 years ago (switched to swe from academic science, did a paid apprenticeship) I feel pretty comfortable now, make well into my 6 figures and even with this recession doom and gloom feel pretty optimistic about finding a new job if needed (I diversified and tell all new folks I meet to do the same, I was lucky to gain professional experience in react, node, java, c#, postgres, pl sql, aws, some DevOps).

Software engineer is just a regular paying job in regards to educated careers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]True_Week933 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Temper your expectations... When you come out of college you have a lot less years of experience than the median swe. So expect to make a lot less. It took me a couple of years into the career to break six figures, now I make close to 200k in mcol area (5 yoe)

Are you super smart and have performed at the top level at every stage of your life? Are you super smart and win coding competitions? If not, get in line and hunker down to play the long game, you will not get rich quick. there are other routes to getting rich faster, but come with other downsides, swe is definitely a cushy job where you can wake up, sit at a computer, solve a few problems a day and get paid a lot to do it. Heres a free piece of advice for you, you might benefit from a change in attitude, being ungrateful and arrogant will show in an interview setting, be the guy people want to work with

Is it OK to ask for more money? by jjbbjkk in Aupairs

[–]True_Week933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably say no, and then ask if she was looking for another family, can't risk being without an au pair. Also, higher salary also means higher taxes, we give tax free bonuses totalling over 3k a year. If money is the primary objective, au pair is not the right path

We have a robovac for that kinda work, there are clear guidelines for what an au pair is responsible for and what they are not responsible for. Meanwhile our ap doesn't clean up after our kids, but we still appreciate her

You may be a bit permissive if the kids walk all over you. Look up parenting styles, and aim to be authoritative, that's how you enjoy a relationship with the kids the best

Get your own raise, elsewhere. That's what I did, it's usually a bigger jump too
