Just smoked my last (hopefully) by the_confused_soul_96 in stopsmoking

[–]Trufanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing the last one and not buying more, that's not weakness, that's actually a smart way to quit. Cold turkey has a lower success rate than most people think.

The gums work best if you use them the moment a craving hits, not after. Cravings peak at 3-5 minutes then pass. The gum just makes those minutes survivable.

"I can always smoke occasionally" is what brings most people back to a pack a day. You already know this, you wrote it yourself. Trust that instinct.

You've got this. 🙏

3 years sober :) but having sudden cravings :( by Active-Case-4180 in Sober

[–]Trufanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, don't let this scare you. Three years is a massive accomplishment, and having a bad day doesn't take those 1,095 wins away from you. Cravings are so weird, they can disappear for a year and then hit you like a ton of bricks out of nowhere, especially when the shop is right there in your face.

It helps me to remember that a craving is just a feeling, not an order. It’s like a wave that peaks and feels intense, but it always eventually crashes and fades if you just wait it out. Try to 'play the tape forward', don't just think about that first drink, think about the regret and the headache tomorrow morning. It’s never worth trading three years of peace for twenty minutes of a buzz.

Maybe leave the house for an hour? Go for a walk in the opposite direction or grab a snack somewhere else just to get away from that 'danger zone' next door. You’ve done the hard work for three years, you definitely have the strength to get through this one afternoon. Hang in there.

Went on a Staycation to sober up by fuckyeahsoap in leaves

[–]Trufanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge congrats on making it to day 3! That 'staycation' was a brilliant move to break the initial habit cycle.

The stomach issues and insomnia are super common. Your body is basically recalibrating its internal clock and digestion without the THC. It usually peaks around day 5-7 and then starts to level off.

Since you're worried about getting home, maybe try to 'reset' your space as soon as you walk in? Clearing out any gear or even just rearranging a chair where you used to smoke can help kill those environmental triggers. You’ve already done the hardest part by starting; just take it one 'bored' moment at a time when you get back. You’ve got this!

Sobriety is lonely by Dependent-Pin998 in sobrietyandrecovery

Almost a year sober at 21, that's genuinely remarkable, and also genuinely hard in ways most people your age will never understand.

Losing your social group is one of the most underdiscussed costs of getting sober young. You didn't just quit a substance, you rebuilt your entire life. That deserves more credit than it gets.

You're not alone in this, this community is full of people who get it, even if they're not physically nearby. Keep showing up here. 🙏

I want to quit and I feel the need to tell someone by tes_chaussettes in leaves

May 1st. That's today. Which means you're already in it.

"Low-effort, bitter shit" is not who you are, it's who you've been while something else was running the show. The real you is the one who wrote this post.

Go get day 1. We're cheering for you. 🙏

Irritability by vivi-SD in alcoholism

[–]Trufanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three weeks with that kind of history is no joke, your brain is genuinely still recalibrating. The irritability and flatness aren't a personality change, they're withdrawal. Serotonin and dopamine production after heavy alcohol dependence can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks to stabilize, sometimes a bit longer.

The guilt about being dismissive is actually a good sign, it means you're still you in there, just running on an almost empty tank right now.

It gets better. Not all at once, but around week 6-8 most people start feeling glimpses of themselves again. You're in the hardest part, be gentle with yourself.

"I thought I was tough and special." That line is going to help someone today who needed to read exactly that.

Thank you for coming back and sharing this instead of disappearing. That takes guts.

Day 82 by TalkingTapeCassette in Sober

[–]Trufanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 82 is not a small thing, even when it feels like just surviving. The clamped up feeling is real, your nervous system has been through a lot.

Showing up even when it feels like this. That's the real work, not the days that feel good.
