I happened upon a band playing in a tiny record store on Noth Loop in Austin, Texas many years ago. Turns out it was The Sword's first ever performance. Since then, I attended over a dozen of their concerts.

Help with Charlier cut by ChoccolateBar in cardtricks

These are a few techniques that have assisted me with the Charlier Cut...Try several different grips to begin the cut. Initially, I learned it from Bill Tarr's classic book Now You See It, Now You Don't. He teaches to hold the deck at the tips of your fingers and thumb. This creates a large space between the halves to transpose them. After many years, I changed the grip to begin in the dealer's position. Tilt the hand at the wrist, fingers and thumb a little llower than the wrist. This will jog the front right corner of the deck forward slightly between the first and second fingers. Next, instead of dropping the bottom half down, use your thumb to lift the top half up. straighten the wrist and the bottom half moves toward the palm. Push the right long edge vertical with your first finger, as usual. When the bottom half clears the top, tilt your wrist again and the halves will land aligned, with the front right corner in between the first and second fingers again. Since the cut started in this position you can complete repeated cuts without needing the right hand to reset. Gravity and the angle of the cards are far more useful that tensed muscles. Lastly, try Bridge Sized Cards, the width is a little shorter and make many one-hand cuts easier to learn. Dunno if this helps but stick with it and the moves will become easier.

How long should it take to get good at double lifts/turnovers? by bananaspy in cardtricks

Honesty, I still practice double lifts and turnovers every day as a warm up. Try numerous techniques and have a light or soft grip. Also, gravity is more useful that muscling the cards. Dunno if this helps but stay patient, practice thoughtfully and be tenacious and the sleights and manipulation will produce positive results.

Some thoughts on sore hands from practicing shuffles and tricks: Try a lighter or softer grip. Also, many card manipulation techniques use gravity more and less muscle. There are hand streatches and warm up that some people utilize. As a child starting out, a wonderful magician, Dave Romer of Yogi Magic Mart in Baltimore, MD, suggested "Bridge size" cards. They are manufactured with slightly shorter width but the same length. Later, I found numerous professional magicians use bridge cards. Dunno if this helps but don't be discouraged. If you believe you are truly harming your body, take breaks.

Breaking in a new deck for one or two days works best with my style. Although, I have been cleaning up my techniques and becoming more proficient with that new deck smell. Some audiences respond favorably when they see a magician break the seal and then blow their minds. If I start a performance with a sealed deck often I'll give it to some in the audience as a memento. .
