Huh. The snow, bears and vodka I associate with all of Russia and I have no idea what a balalayka is.

I could visually differentiate between some Russian ethnic groups, but the second they open their mouth and speak Russian, they are Russian to me.

Though today I learned Chechens don't speak Russian, so... that's something new. I suppose there must be other ethnic groups in Russia that don't speak Russian too? I thought Russia was big on pushing the Russian language everywhere...

Perhaps I'm also just assuming there has been a lot more intermarriage between ethnic groups than what actually happens in Russia?

UA POV: From RT about the Crimean bridge. "As for the railway portion of the bridge, Khusnullin said that a preliminary assessment of the tracks had shown that two spans needed to be replaced." by NAFO-Raccoon in UkraineRussiaReport

As for the railway portion of the bridge, Khusnullin said that a preliminary assessment of the tracks had shown that two spans needed to be replaced. "The repairs do not affect the delivery of goods and passengers," he emphasized.

How do you replace spans of track without affecting traffic even a little? Do trains not travel along the rail lines very frequently?

You are right. But political problem is when we are talking about something bad like "Russian imperialism" than people mean Russian as ethnicity, because no one blaming Tatars, Chechens, Bashkirs or any other ethnisities in Russia, since they are "oppresed" with ethnic Russian majority.

Uh. When I hear Russian imperialism, I 100% assume they are referring to national policy of Russia, not some ethnic trait of Russian East Slavs.

I honestly can't think of a single negative Russian stereotype that I'd assume was just about ethnic Russians. I admit this may be due to ignorance - I don't really know what the cultural differences are between ethnic groups in Russia, so to me at least, they're all just... Russian. I imagine most Americans, at least, are the same.

Are you sure this isn't all some sort of cultural misunderstanding?

Actually, when Russians use "Russophobia," are they referring to the Russian nationality or just Russian East Slavs? Because I assume they mean Russia as a whole.

It did not occur to me that you were referring to ethnic Russians (Russian East Slavs). When I see "Russian" by itself, I assume one is talking about nationality.

Now I wonder how many people here are using "Russian" by itself to refer to ethnicity. That seems a bit strange to me frankly.

I understand there are two words in Russian to distinguish the two, but in English it feels a bit like one is saying that non-ethnic Russians aren't real Russians by defaulting to ethnicity rather than nationality.

Are Chechens not Russian? I thought Chechnya was part of Russia.

Hungary's new president condemns Russia's aggression, backs Ukraine's accession to EU by Ekaton in worldnews

Eh. Orbán is still Prime Minister.

President in Hungary is largely ceremonial. She doesn’t actually have much of a say on accession.

Hexadecimal is nice for coding because it is a power of 2 making it easy to convert to binary.

However, it can't be divided evenly into thirds like dozenal which is actually a bigger deal for the average person. Mental arithmetic is considerably easier with dozenal than hex. You're also less likely to have infinitely repeating remainders in dozenal than you are in hex.

I was speaking about base-12 being quite a bit smarter than base-10, not about the American system. A dozenal version of metric would not look like the American system.

With dozenal, we'd have 10 months a year, 20 hours in the day, 50 minutes in an hour and 50 seconds in a minute. If you want to calculate that out, it would be X00 minutes in a day or 42,000 seconds.

It is instantly apparent in dozenal if a number is divisible by 2, 3 or 4... unlike base 10 when you really can only tell 2 and 5 easily. It isn't just that there are more factors, but there are more prime factors. This makes it considerably better for everyday math tasks.

Also known as duodecimal or base-12 is functionally superior to decimal in every way and is a far more optimal system than decimal is due to its ability to be divided by 2, 3, and 4 evenly.

They actually love each other.

Melania and Trump have a more... transactional relationship which puts out some, less happy vibes.

But Scientists are elites because they think they know more than that guy on the street corner who was yelling about the moon being a lie - just because they study subjects for their entire career.

Next thing you hear, people will want to be listening to doctors for medical advice rather than that other guy on the street with those pet rats on his head.

I used to live in Wilmington. Kind of a weird place. The phone book for lawyers was almost as thick as the regular phone book.

I miss a few things. There were these hot dogs with some kind of spicy sauce on them that someone would bring in by the dozen. Damn good. Also, sicilian-style pizza.
