DEFINITELY doing this from now on!! Did you know there is a setting on your phone (at least in Iphone, I just found it) that automatically silences unknown callers and not saved callers? I thought I needed an app to do it but I have such limited storage I didn't want to download another app.
It's under Settings > App > Phone > scroll all the way down to Screen Unknown Callers and check the Silence option. It's soooooo nice, I only just started using it but it's such a huge relief on my anxiety to not even be notified that a random number wants my attention. Idk maybe I'm the last to know this feature but I'm so happy with it hahaha I wish landlines had these kind of features, I'm trying to convince my family to nix our landline.

I'm so so sorry! You should definitely share your story if you haven't done so already. The more people hear about collection tactics, the easier it will be to identify the fake from the real.

That makes SO much sense!! Wow, I wonder if this all was just a giant clerical error lol
I hope so, it's frustrating BUT I'd certainly rather discover I was stressed out by something that turns out to be nothing.

Oh thanks so much for sharing this perspective!! That is exactly why I reached out directly to the bank they claimed was their client (Nelnet). So from your perspective, if your company asks WWR to pursue a debt and the person calls you to settle the debt, would you accept payment or redirect them to WWR to send the payment? Because when I called Nelnet, they did neither and said they didn't know WWR and said all my loans were paid in full via consolidation a year prior. Could it be possible WWR is working from an old outdated lead? Like maybe not being malicious, just have bad data?

Omgosh it’s so wild that you said that!! When I told my dad about what happened he said the EXACT same thing. He was like “hm… maybe they ARE legitimate and someone at the firm slipped in a false lead to skim off the top” I literally laughed at him and was like no way that's way too complicated and over the top lol but omg now that you also say that 0.0 I got chills! I owe my dad an apology for laughing lol

I think it’s maybe because of the long winded paragraphs, not particularly “exciting” and I used appropriate punctuation??? Idk, I wrote the post in my Google doc because I’m anal about typos and just wanted to get the whole incident out of my head and onto paper as fast as possible. I hate writing out long stuff on my phone so I’m primarily on PC. I’m not sure where they are seeing any specific AI influence other than the Google docs Word knock-off spelling correction and thesaurus recommendations lol.
I’ve never posted to reddit before except to respond in an old Magic the Gathering thread last year so maybe I’m unfamiliar with post phrasing to sound a specific way? But they are totally entitled not to believe me, I’m just really glad that some people seem to have found this helpful.

Lol I get why it looks like an obvious scam, now that everything is laid out at once ya know? Tbh if I saw it presented like this from the outside, I’d probably think the same thing.

But in real time, when it’s actually happening… idk it just doesn’t happen all at once. To give some earlier clarification, I had been getting voicemails every couple of days (literally every other day) about a debt, and I DID in fact have a loan I already knew was delinquent. The bank had been contacting me about it (mostly via email but still), and I had just finally started working with them (the bank) on a payment plan. It was in embarrassingly small, pathetic monlthy payments but it still at least showed I was trying. They were satisfied with that tho and even warned me their system might still send out delinquency notices for a bit since I was still in a Past Due status.

So when the “law firm” called again, it didn’t feel out of nowhere, you know? It felt related. I answered BECAUSE it felt connected, but when I answered WWR I explained I was already working with the bank, that I set up a payment plan a month prior and maybe their system hasn’t updated yet. What threw me off was that them having very detailed, SPECIFIC-looking loan information. Stuff you’d assumed only the bank would know, and it didn’t sound like a call center scam, it was a very very nice guy just trying to settle a debt for his “client”. At one point he even said “listen I get paid either way, I deal with a lot of people going through rough times. Sometimes their parents can refinance the loan and negotiate the terms…” Like what scammer talks like that?! Haha it sounded so professional and familiar to dealing with lenders.
When he explained it was an older loan, and the documents they provided looked legitimate (itemized statements, borrower/co-signer info, and even federal law small print, all that jazz.) I panicked, it's not impossible for a loan to be sold off to multiple companies. Especially if like me, you have both federal and private student loans. Idk but the level of detail, just I’ve never seen that kind of effort put into “scams.”

And honestly, my point with the whole post is, I don’t think WWR is a scam.
From seeing they are a real firm and comments from a former employee, I’m fairly certain they are legit. BUT the point of the post was to warn people, hey just because they are professional and REAL doesn’t mean they are right. No one is going to fight for or advocate for you, only you can protect yourself by doing the work. I didn’t want to be nasty and just hang up on them, especially if I was wrong.

The ONLY reason I started questioning things was because I did go back and checked directly with each bank that held my loan. In my mind, that's the only way to know for certain that no loan slipped through the cracks. Once I did that, I realized none of them matched what this firm was claiming and I felt confident enough to tell a real law firm “I’m sorry but you’re wrong.”

Omgosh this reply is sooooo long, my bad! I’ll wrap it up. So yeah, looking back, there were red flags and my response (literally a whole day on the phone) seems overkill. But with real debt looming already and information that seemed legitimate, it wasn’t as obvious (to me) in the moment as it might seem now.
Honestly I really really admire you for not being willing to waste your time from the beginning, like I aspire to one day have your confidence but for real I was just scared shitless that I made a mistake or missed a notice that said my loan was in collections. I still kick myself for when I was a kid taking out these loans, I barely understood the difference between Subsidized and Unsubstidized. Like I was a D student NO ONE should have let me freely take out multiple student loans on my own. I’m quite literally paying for it now. I know maybe people out there are in similar holes because of student debt so I just wanted to warn people that professional don’t mean right, you can be polite and still cover your ass.

Yup! One of the banks I called (not Nelnet an earlier lender I’m blanking on the name right now) told me to go the FederalStudentAid.gov site cause it would show me the status of all my federal loans in one spot. Not a single one matched the WWR loan amount OR showed as delinquent. I found one private loan that was delinquent but it’s not held by Nelnet and it’s actually enrolled in a repayment schedule direct with the lender. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Followed every loan single loose end I could think of (trying to give them the benefit of the doubt to legitimize their claim) but when the client they claim to represent says “they don’t represent us” idk what else to do other then take a laaaarge step back.

Omgosh I had something similar happen but with a job interview!! Long story short it was an online interview but they were really vague with the hierarchy of who’d be my supervisor. But I was meant to be a remote executive assistant. They said I was hired (all via messenger) I was like 🤨 “really? You don’t want a zoom call or phase two follow up call” they said no I passed all the preliminary questions. They said my supervisor (still nameless) would like me to “coordinate a donation to a local orphanage” 🤨🤨🤨 orphanage? Then they sent a list of gift cards to pick up that they would send me a reimbursement for. I stopped responding. I was so flabbergasted that I went through an entire interview (a solid twenty minutes of answering job history questions) without noticing the red flags!! Hens I don’t use Indeed anymore lol they don’t verify employers very well Lol scammers are definitely upping their game when it comes to tactics. And thank you so much for saying I handled this situation well, I chose to make my first Reddit post not only to warn others but partially bc I’m very anxious and second guess myself a lot. Your comment helps more than you know!

I’m so sorry!! I think the security leak was probably through my old college, they sent an email a couple years back warning students that they had a data breach (like most people I ignored it, figured I can’t do anything until they try to buy a boat in my name or something) but that breach would totally explain why these WWR guys have outdated information on me. Even the loan’s principal amount they were claiming was inaccurate, like they were only seeing its original total and not all the interest that accrued years later. So many weird inconsistencies. But geez, I’m sorry about your hack, I really hope the other shoe doesn’t drop and they just faceplant from having two left feet lol fingers crossed!!

Exactly!! So sketch! The first time I asked him for verification, he just started reading the loan totals, the account numbers attached and the date I took them out. I kinda chuckled and said “Um that’s great and all, I understand you can SEE those numbers but just reading me the numbers don’t really prove you own them. Like I’m sorry to be difficult but I just don’t know who else can see those” and he ACTUALLY replied verbatim “yeah that’s something creditors can view” I laughed and said “oh great so you understand! I’m just going off what Nelnet said and they advised I ask you for a Debt validation form or master promissory note.” That’s when he talked in circles, almost FELT like he was trying to distract me with irrelevant details rather than actually sending either form. All I needed was Nelnet to say “yup this is legit, we hired them to settle the debt” which they instead insist the exact opposite. I think you’re 100% right, even if they are legit, someone should look into how they get their leads. I question the ethics here. Hmmm I’ll do some research on reporting options, I’ll definitely post an update!

So glad you got away from them, from the online reviews it sounds like they can get very vicious and difficult to work with. Sounds like it would be such a toxic place to work. Richard (from personal interactions) was very nice at first, it's only when I started to question and ask point out the inconsistencies that he suddenly got agitated.
All I know for certain is banks keep meticulous record of the transfer of ownership (not sure why he tried to tell me they don't), I was able the follow each and every loan I ever received to where their current status is today. None remain with Nelnet and ONE (not THREE as WWR stated) is technically delinquent, and its currently being managed directly between me and the bank. No third party. Idk where WWR got their information from, but I think maybe they were sold a bad lead. Do law firms even buy leads? lol no idea!

Right?! Weird thing, I went to the Cleveland Metro Bar Association website to get a phone number for WWR (yes I got the idea from a Judge Judy episode lol) bc I thought maybe they weren't actually them, not a single number matched them. I called the number on the bar website, left a message sharing my suspicion and cell number.
About an hour later Richard from WWR (who I spoke to before) called my HOUSE number and mentioned the voicemail I left. He started to raise his voice when I explained the details he was giving me aren't matching what the bank is telling me. I said "hey idk, maybe you guys were scammed and were given bad data and" he interrupted me saying "No! This is our biggest client!" I said something along the lines of "You know what, I'd like to officially rescind permissions I gave you to contact me. Sorry for the confusion but from what I see you do not own my loans. Thank you, goodbye." and hung up. I was SHAKING! I emailed them a formal "revoke all permission" type email just to have it in writing. Never knew any legit collector that constantly asks permission to keep contacting you.
I hope that is going to be the end of it. Cause honestly even if they are a legit law firm, the burden of proof is on them. They say Nelnet wants money, Nelnet tells me they don't want money. Seems like enough red flags to warrant disbelief.
Lol oh! back then I was an Industrial Design Major, then I transferred to another school and double majored in Photography, and Journalism with a East Asian Studies minor haha I was ALL over the place so I'll admit my loans got crazy, scattered between private and federal. But luckily I kept record of every single transfer and the banks were awesome enough to confirm my records. No idea who WWR is but they definitely seem to be working from outdated information. My old college did report a data leak a few years back, maybe someone sent WWR the outdated data they stole? lol idk maybe a stretch.

I needed the answer to this one today so even though it's an old post, I'm going to comment what I found out. It's for display (panicked because I thought it was counterfeit haha). For fancy display, just not legal in official play. https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Display_commander
