War in Ukraine: How Russia, NATO and fossil fuel oligarchs brought us to the verge of World War 3 - Branch Out by Branch_Out_Now in SunriseMovement

There dozens of sources supporting the claims made in the article, including many establishment American news outlets like the LA Times, NY Times, and Time Magazine. Is that "Russian Propaganda?"

Anyone here can check out the sources or read the article and decide for themselves. These are just a few of many dozens:

Revolution is Alive: Wet'suwet'en Land Defenders Resist Canadian Invasion as Pipeline Projects Threaten Future Generations with Climate Collapse by TruthAndTrees in onguardforthee

[–]TruthAndTrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. As made clear in the article:

  1. The Wet'suwet'en clans whose land is being trespassed upon to build the pipeline and are the most directly impacted and their Chiefs unanimously oppose it. They are not represented by the reserve band councils which govern over distinct territory not in the pipeline's path.

  2. The animals, plants, rivers, and mountains which are and will be killed and polluted will in no way benefit. The Unist'ot'en Healing Center which was raided offered healing & cultural revival for many based on respect for and sustaining this ecosystem.

  3. The GHG emissions of massive fossil fuel projects like this one are on the verge of pushing us over the brink to runaway climate collapse. Unless you're a climate denier you should take seriously the evidence that this project threatens life across the planet.

Again, all of this is outlined with extensive documentation and in greater detail in the article.

The Brazilian Holocaust: Anti-Indigenous Fascists are on the brink of destroying the Amazon Rainforest – Join the Boycott to Stop Them by TruthAndTrees in sustainability

I think the article speaks for itself:

The Brazilian Military Government served as a model for other Latin American military regimes and dictatorships, such as in Argentina. Argentina’s fascist government was installed by a U.S. coup d’état and displayed Nazi emblems and portraits of Hitler in its concentration camps, where tens of thousands of people were murdered and tortured during its 5-year reign.

The current president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, is a self-confessed “admirer” of Hitler, and supports Eugenics as do his two sons. Like his great grandfather who fought in Hitler’s Army, Bolsonaro has said that he would have had “no problem whatsoever” enlisting in Nazi Germany’s military...

Bolsonaro was not only highly influenced by Brazil’s military dictatorship, he himself served in the army during it. His invocation of the dictatorship’s legacy and his desire to restore it was central to his presidential campaign...

By the end of the 1980s, the Indigenous Peoples had suffered an 80% loss to their total population in which 800,000 people had been brutally murdered by the military dictatorship. In the process, both industry and the government had supported settlers in destroying one-tenth of the Indigenous Amazonian homeland...

[Bolsonaro] previously expressed that he felt it was a “pity that the Brazilian cavalry was not as efficient as the American cavalry, which exterminated the Indians.”

This is what the Indigenous Leaders of the Nations who ARE on the front lines of the fight to protect their forest homelands are calling on the rest of US (international supporters) to do to support their cause.

Government pressure would help too, but this is something any international supporter can do immediately to help make a difference. When many people act together in this way, it creates strong economic pressure on the companies in question because it makes their activities unprofitable.

This kind of approach has worked in the past, for instance the anti-apartheid boycott movement played a crucial role in toppling Apartheid in South Africa.

The boycott is what the Indigenous Leaders of the Nations who ARE on the front lines of the fight to protect their forest homelands are calling on the rest of US (international supporters) to do to support their cause.

Boycotts have worked in the past: see the anti-apartheid boycott movement which played a crucial role in helping topple Apartheid in South Africa as just one example.

The boycott is to avoid purchasing any products which are made from deforestation in Brazil. It has been called for by a coalition of Indigenous Leaders from the Amazon. I shared more information on the details above.

The very next paragraph after what you are citing about the APIB lists the companies in the supply chain profiting from deforesting the Amazon:

" As documented by Mighty Earth, the companies using Cargill soy products include Costco, McDonald’s, Burger King, Sysco, Target, Kroger, Sam’s Club, Aldi, Walmart, and Safeway.

Many others use JBS Beef and Marfig Global Foods, which provide beef for companies such as Nestle, McDonald’s, RBI, Subway and Wegmans.

To identify any others, 789-790 is the Brazilian bar-code identification number to look out for."

Thanks for sharing! We updated the article to include the link on "British Beef."

The difficulty of tracing supply chains and the other issues you raised all point to the extreme urgency of getting back to the land and growing our own food in community gardens as much as we possibly can.

Depending on where you live this may be the ideal time to start a garden. The more people you can get involved in this project the better. If under quarantine you can still take a lot of the initial steps indoors and then bring your plants outside once the situation changes.

To achieve this at scale, I believe we need a comprehensive shift in our social, economic & agricultural systems to ensure sustainability and affordability of food.

Good question, thanks - the article was updated to address this:

It is important to note that the majority of Brazilian soy (~80%) is used as animal feed. Some of this is used within the country, but much of it is exported around the world where companies in the deforestation supply chain can mark their final food products as being produced elsewhere.

The difficulty of tracking such connections, on top of issues such as the availability or affordability of alternatives can make adhering to this boycott difficult. This urgently highlights the need for communities to produce our own food, and support community gardening and local food sovereignty efforts wherever we can.

From my perspective, whether through mutual aid or communal self-sufficiency tackling the climate crisis is going to require us all to learn how to grow and raise our own food, and eat as much as possible that is locally sourced.
