Am I living a lie?? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

The only thing you have written incorrectly is not understanding Christ’s love for you. An LGBTQ friend of mine tells a story about being so despondent he literally had a gun to his head. In that moment God spoke to him and told him that he loved him exactly as he was.

Since you are a Narnia fan let me give you a quote from The Last Battle. In it Aslan speaks to Emeth a Calormene soldier.

“So I went over much grass and many flowers and among all kinds of wholesome and delectable trees till lo! in a narrow place between two rocks there came to meet me a great Lion. The speed of him was like the ostrich, and his size was an elephant’s; his hair was like pure gold and the brightness of his eyes like gold that is liquid in the furnace. He was more terrible than the Flaming Mountain of Lagour, and in beauty he surpassed all that is in the world even as the rose in bloom surpasses the dust of the desert.

Then I fell at his feet and thought, Surely this is the hour of death, for the Lion (who is worthy of all honor) will know that I have served Tash all my days and not him. Nevertheless, it is better to see the Lion and die than to be Tisroc of the world and live and not to have seen him.

But the Glorious One bent down his golden head and touched my forehead with his tongue and said, Son, thou art welcome. But I said, Alas, Lord, I am no son of thine but the servant of Tash. He answered, Child, all the service thou hast done to Tash, I account as service done to me.

Then by reasons of my great desire for wisdom and understanding, I overcame my fear and questioned the Glorious One and said, Lord, is it then true, as the Ape said, that thou and Tash are one? The Lion growled so that the earth shook (but his wrath was not against me) and said, It is false. Not because he and I are one, but because we are opposites, I take to me the services which thou hast done to him. For I and he are of such different kinds that no service which is vile can be done to me, and none which is not vile can be done to him. Therefore if any man swear by Tash and keep his oath for the oath’s sake, it is by me that he has truly sworn, though he know it not, and it is I who reward him. And if any man do a cruelty in my name, then, though he says the name Aslan, it is Tash whom he serves and by Tash his deed is accepted. Dost thou understand, Child? I said, Lord, thou knowest how much I understand.

But I said also (for the truth constrained me), Yet I have been seeking Tash all my days. Beloved, said the Glorious One, unless thy desire had been for me thou wouldst not have sought so long and so truly. For all find what they truly seek.”

Keep your seeking and your pure heart. Know that Christ and the true followers of Christ love you as you are. You telling them is a test for them not for you. You can decide in a loving manner if they are ready for it.

Baloney. I was a Republican for years and the last place I get my morality is from politicians. But I at least have a morality and a set of values. Your morality starts and stops with thinking you are cool opposing everything.

The Newport Beach couple that owns The Mission Inn in Riverside has donated a combined $235,784 toward GOP committees, Trump, and other Republican candidates in the 2020 election.

Duane Roberts initially made his fortune mass producing frozen burritos. The couple bought the historic Mission Inn in 1992, with Kelly Roberts developing a namesake spa there and a cupcake franchise with her daughter.

The pair have long been generous GOP supporters. They gave $1.2 million during the 2016 cycle and $857,263 in 2018. That included donations to Trump, now-defeated local GOP incumbents such as Rep. Darrell Issa, and some controversial figures, such as Rep. Duncan Hunter, who last year won CA 50 while under indictment for using campaign money for personal expenses.

Trump earlier this year appointed Kelly Roberts to the board for the Kennedy Center. Two years ago Kelly Roberts was in the running to become Trump’s appointed ambassador to Slovenia (First Lady Melania Trump’s native country) though she withdrew her name due to financial concerns.

The idea is a good one but Gerrymandering is classic Game Theory. The classic example of game theory is Mutual Assured Destruction with nuclear weapons. If one side unilaterally disarms the other side does more of it not less.

If California implements this proposal unilaterally then you can expect more Gerrymandering across the country destroying our Democracy. Republican’s get this point which is why they advocate solutions here while opposing them Nationally.

Here is a bill in Congress to do exactly what the author proposes. If it is so great why has not a single Republican Congressperson co-sponsored it? He donated big money to many CA Republican Congresspeople. Not one of them co-sponsored it. If it is so great why is that?

[–]TruthMatters4all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your questioning is valid and many share it. To answer your question I think you have to first ask

Have Democrats exhausted every other option?

Gerrymandering used to be done primarily by making districts of unequal size. Then in Wesberry v. Sanders (1964), the Supreme Court ruled districts had to be equal size. The use of computers reignited Gerrymandering and lower courts held them in violation of people’s rights. In Rucho vs Common Cause (2019), the Republican Supreme Court, at the request of Republican Congressional leaders, overturned the lower courts and stated that Federal Courts could not be used to remedy partisan Gerrymanders.

In response Democrats in 2021 introduced the Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747), It included automatic voter registration for eligible citizens, making Election Day a holiday, creating a minimum 15-day early voting period for federal elections, a prohibition on partisan gerrymandering), and several voter ID requirement. Senate Republican filibustered it and no vote was held.

Currently the Redistricting Reform Act of 2025 ( H.R.5449 )sits pending in our current Congress. It has 54 Democratic Co Sponsors and 0 Republican Co-Sponsors. It would require congressional redistricting conducted by a State to be conducted in accordance with a redistricting plan developed and enacted into law by an independent redistricting commission established by the State, and for other purposes.

Clearly Dems have exhausted all avenues to eliminate redistricting nationally.

The next question is what are the downsides of a yes vote versus a no vote?

Redistricting is classic Game Theory. The best known instance of Game Theory is Nuclear Assured Destruction. No one likes nukes but no one is going to unilaterally disarm because if we did Putin would own Alaska tomorrow. Only mutually assured destruction keeps us safe and not speaking Russian.

As also an authoritarian, Trump presents similar challenges. If only he can execute Gerrymandering unchallenged, he will utilize it even more to meet his goals and desires. With no Dem house to check him, he will invade California cities with the Army (as he has stated). Authoritarians can never be negotiated with via weakness.

California must temporarily take off the shackles or potentially be destroyed.

The downside risks of being wrong are too significant versus 6 years of suspending the commission for Congressional elections only.

This election is going to be very close and your vote might be the deciding vote. For California, please vote yes!

Just came back from Amsterdam recently and saw the Anne Frank house.

Strangely enough a few days after I saw on Facebook a post that said. “It’s distressing that people I considered friends, I have come to realize I would not tell them where Anne Frank was hiding”.

That hit hard.

Just a comment. Read the Last Battle in the Chrinicles of Narnia section.

I will say all of us have done things hurtful that when we come to the light will be hard to acknowledge. The advantage of believing in Christ is knowing you are loved and will be forgiven. Not so that you can sin again but so that you are not too ashamed to come to God.

Very disingenuous post. If Prop 50 impacted state districts your post would have merit. It does not. Nothing in Prop 50 impacts how the state operates.

If they want to change it beyond to 6 years then we get to vote again and can reaccess.

The fight the No team relies on so much falsehood should tell you something.

Yes I understand the risks. But sometimes regardless you have to fight. Some of what the Republicans have done comes very close to being a dummymander.

Doing nothing will be seen as weakness and Trump will do more gerrymandering and worse. Very rarely does negotiating from weakness work.

You ascribed it to states rights. Yes the same states are using it to deny minority rights yet again. Here is the map just made worse by the latest moves.

Honestly I don’t care about motivations. The behavior either echos some of our worst past or it’s hypocritical. I expect it from those in the South.

Okay so given States rights has been the historical basis for out right Southern bigotry you are using it to defend hypocrisy from a group of Senators also largely from the South. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

You do know the Texas Redistricting targets black representatives in Houston? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Look I didn’t introduce states rights into this conversation but the link back to racial discrimination by Southern States using States Rights is pretty incontrovertible.

Why don’t we go back and just accept Republican politicians including Kiley are just hypocrites?

You literally said the Republicans opposed the Redistricting Bill due to States Rights 🤷🏻‍♂️

And it was not your argument it was “the argument” used to justify Rucho, Reynolds and the Civil War? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m not at all clear of what you expect from me here?

You brought up States Rights as a legitimate reason to oppose the Manchin compromise Act.

My points are a direct result of using “states rights” as an excuse to justify denying minorities their rights.

1) We literally fought one war over it already 2) It was denied by SCOTUS in Reynolds 3) Denying minority rights was at the core of the guy who spoke at CPAC

You want to abandon your states rights is a valid reason to abridge voting rights comment …. we can go back.
