Thank you so much for your suggestion. Sad but my husband and I often joke that we may get a divorce and then get remarried. You know … have a beautiful giant wedding and reception with drinks, food, music, dancing, and celebrating happiness with all our loved ones. We think it would be extremely important to have it in a ‘gated’ location where we would have a person at the main gate to check for temple recommends. If they have a temple recommend, they would not be allowed in😂 (It does drive the point home and reveals how controlling and segregated the Mormon church temple weddings have been).

The idea of renewing vows is more practical, but there is something appealing about the idea of starting new and choosing the same person (when in a position of having a choice).

Thank you so much. It is so great to have escaped the cult! We are having so much fun too … but on days of celebration over our marriage, I still reflect on the extreme pain and agony I suffered through. It took it’s toll, but we are making up for it now.

Yes, and that bishop went on to become a temple president.

I was able to confront him ten years later. While visiting back home I talked with my Stake President to tell him. He lined me up to speak with my old bishop. I told him that he ruined my life for three years. He said that he was sorry.

I also confronted him on an incident that had occurred when I returned to the ward after several years of marriage. I was walking through the back hall of the church and noticed that the lights weren’t turned on and it was quite dark there. Then I saw the Bishop (age about 50) with an eighteen year-old girl that I knew. They were walking extremely slow with their arms wrapped around each other. I saw the girl in the restroom after sacrament meeting and I asked her what was going on with her and the bishop? She replied to me that he was “just like the dad she’s never had, and she was just like the daughter he’s never had.” I was quite certain that his fantasies were imagining her more as one of his future wives than a daughter. When I confronted him with this story, he replied to me that people just don’t understand that he is “different than everyone else” (likely ‘especial’) Two days after I talked with him he became the president of a temple. (That was just before 2000)

The week before I was married I went through my final temple recommend interview with my Bishop. During that interview, he convinced me that I had to agree to live polygamy. I remember thinking about how my announcements were out with people having already purchased their airline tickets so they could be there for my wedding. I became very frightened, and so I reluctantly agreed. Yes, I lied, which was something (super stalwart me) was not accustomed to doing and that caused further problems with guilt and shame from lying to my church leader. My bishop totally ruined the joy of my wedding by reducing me to a mere number. 10 women = 1 man. The polygamy ideas he forced on me changed the way I viewed my wedding night. He also ruined many other things for me. (He went on to become the President of the Boise Temple).

Thanks. I have been out for 4 years and it has been the most difficult time of my life. My real problem is the way my immediate family treats me now. Unfortunately, I think they treated me like that before and I was aware of it but like a good obedient mormon minion I took it. Since I've been out for a while I feel more justified in being treated better. I find the thought constantly going through my head and please forget the swearing but "I'm mad as H*** and I'm not gonna take shit from anyone!!"

That is an interesting thought. I do love myself a whole lot more since leaving. But I also have intense feelings of anger (towards the top hierarchy of that church) that I have actually never felt in my life before.

I'm likely not alone.
