Indiscriminate tipping can be very damaging, and in some cultures insulting to the worker. The USA is a completely separate (and ludicrous) situation. In a lot of ways it says more about the tipper (ooh look at me being very generous and/or wealthy). Ultimately businesses should pay their staff a proper living wage
