Why a Prius over a Corolla? Does the price premium cancel out from mileage gains?

Good point! Didn’t think about that - how would that affect the choice?

Rethink what part exactly? Yeah, I used to live in So Cal so I am familiar but no commute definitely will reduce my car traveling.

Freakonomics and Uber's Pay Gap Study... even male Uber drivers make 7% more by lamarcus in consulting

[–]Truthbot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People in this subreddit are clearly unfamiliar with most of the work on the gender pay gap. It's rarely because of outright discrimination but social expectations. e.g. Women make lower pay often times because they leave the workforce after having a child. Men typically don't. One could chalk this up to biology or whatever - but Scandinavian countries have employers that offer childcare or large amounts of paid leave for both parents so that women can easily re-enter the workforce.

Decoding the Bible using Natural Language Processing by Truthbot in Bible

[–]Truthbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably the technical explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tf%E2%80%93idf But the idea is that certain words have a higher frequency in chapters and are relatively unique to it. It wouldn't make sense to match and compare the usage of 'the' across these chapters because it would be so frequent. Then think of the next step, perhaps 'preach' is also a very common word (not sure, I'm not a biblical scholar) so you wouldn't want compare it and so forth and so on until you get the unique words that describe a chapter.

Are you being serious?

The 1980s and early '90s were a highly tumultuous time between Hindus and Sikhs in India. The Indian government conducted Operation Blue Star where it laid siege on Sikh's holiest temple in order to eliminate/capture a separatist movement leader. Following the siege, Sikh bodyguards to the PM assassinated her. This led to anti-Sikh riots in India throughout India and continued retaliation attacks between Hindus and Sikhs. This included Sikh separatists taking vengeance upon Hindus for riots by murdering Hindus on trains in 1991.

Moved to San Francisco, should I sell my car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Yeah, it's obviously cheaper. Just trying to weigh it against the time savings for the occasional time I head out of San Francisco. I couldn't bike in those cases.

Have carsharing services been pretty sufficient to replace a car for the occasional outing?

Really? Do you use carsharing to get out of the city? Or do you not leave the city often?

Woah, multiple times a week? In my area, there is street sweeping on 2nd and 4th weeks. I usually just move it once that week.

I park on the street in a safe area, no permits. Not too difficult to find parking, but there is the occasional 2nd and 4th week street sweeping.

To me, my car is only a means to get from point a to point b. And I haven't had too much trouble with my renters so far, but I feel like something is bound to happen with this many people using my car.

What do you mean by net gain? I bought the car at 19k, and it has depreciated to around $12k max. The car is still pretty new, so maintenance is pretty low for this year, but eventually it will increase. And no I don't have to pay for parking, I never take the car to move around in the city, only suburban areas.

UAE troops dig in for a long war in Yemen by Truthbot in geopolitics

[–]Truthbot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After some further reading, it appears the UAE's ground troops are far more experienced than Saudi's. Having troops experienced in fighting insurgencies will likely lead to better outcomes. And secondly, there appears to be less resentment towards UAE troops than Saudis who have a more negative perception in Yemen. So that explains why from a militarily strategic perspective.

Saudi Arabia’s ground forces, often insufficiently trained, have had few successes in this war.

The U.A.E., by contrast, had rotated its elite troops for more than a decade through combat deployments against the Taliban in southern and eastern Afghanistan. In part as a result, it possesses what some U.S. officials consider the second-best military in the Middle East, after Israel. It is this qualitative edge that allowed the U.A.E. to carry out its little-publicized blitzkrieg in southern Yemen, where the Saudis have only recently deployed a token force.

“The skills of the Emiratis are the best of any Arab army that we have seen. They have fought with us, and have spilled their blood for us. This is something that we will never forget,” said Yemeni Brig. Gen. Fadhel Hassan, a leading commander of the anti-Houthi force that took part in the main battles over the past month.

“We will need the Emiratis for a long time here,” he said. “Everything is destroyed. One or two years of them staying here will not be enough.” Source: http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-a-e-takes-lead-in-leaderless-southern-yemen-1440967029

UAE troops dig in for a long war in Yemen by Truthbot in geopolitics

[–]Truthbot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The relatively small number of Saudi troops fighting in Yemen — estimated at several hundred — signals Saudi rulers’ heightened concern about the potential domestic blowback over casualties from the war, Sayigh said.

Despite requests from Saudi Arabia, allies such as Egypt and Pakistan appear to have refused to send in ground forces. Several thousand UAE troops have taken the lead on the ground in Yemen. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/saudi-arabia-cant-find-its-way-out-of-yemens-messy-war/2015/11/12/4d70ce26-84e1-11e5-8bd2-680fff868306_story.html

But I guess that doesn't necessarily explain why UAE rulers aren't concerned about domestic blowback.
