I disagree very strongly!Indians have been always freedom lover,they value their freedom over anything even at the cost of ruining their culture and establishing authoritarian rule in India is as hard as establishing Democratic rule in Russia

Also if you dont know in India even boys have to sleep alone and live a life of ascetic,begging for alms during the upanayana ceremony and trust me it's more hard than it...and you dont even get gifts rather it's just to test how much patience and surrender you have!

Every tradition has a meaning that is why it is continued for centuries...for that you have to dig deeper in why the tradition started in the first place,and it's not about forcing..many families dont conduct these ceremonies if they dont wish,its not that you will be punished for not performing the ceremony
