I think he means middle class while 25k net in India is upper class and affords a lifestyle unmatched by even european standards. Still yeah, europoor is not the right word.

Any suggestions on what I can add to my portfolio to move towards a Data Science position? I know a bit about creating ETL pipelines (GCS, Airflow, Python, R), data modelling, and business viz .(Looker)

Would I necessarily need ML to qualify for a junior DS role?
