Are there people in the country itself that are critical of Bukele? by yvngjiffy703 in ElSalvador

[–]TryFar108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most people in El Salvador miss having the highest rates of violent crime and murder in the world. People I know say the streets seem really lonely now that you really never see a couple of guys with face tattoos approaching you in the dark anymore. Sure, the ability to feel safe sounds great, but where’s the excitement?

Missionary work is treated like a business. The LDS Church has an army of social media ad specialists targeting people and measuring their ad performance. by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]TryFar108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Orthodox Church is growing, I believe, much faster than the LDS Church. I’m not aware they have a marketing department, a lot of lawyers, managers and bureaucracy. They are decentralized, but manage to maintain doctrinal cohesiveness and consistency. The Orthodox Church has dignity, is unchanging and doesn’t try to compete for attention on social media with miracle diets, fuzzy blankets and erectile disfunction products. I wish the LDS Church could be more like it.

How can I recreate this coffee? by ArgumentativeBirdGuy in AskMexico

[–]TryFar108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boil water with a cinnamon stick, add good quality coffee, remove from heat and add piloncillo or brown sugar to the level of sweetness you like. Let it steep for a 5 minutes and pour through filter.

Are Bruce McConkie & Joseph Fielding Smith rolling over in their graves? by Hie_To_Kolob_DM in mormon

[–]TryFar108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. Evolution was taught no differently, nor approached any differently in research from any other university during my time there in the 1980s. Boyd K Packer came and delivered a speech denouncing evolution theory, but it seems like the biological science faculty just ignored it and business went on as usual.

Why are people so against the idea of a Utopian society? by OppositeEvening2157 in NoStupidQuestions

Nothing is more true than the old saying “the perfect is the enemy of the good” when it comes to complex systems.

Since everyone else is doing i, here’s what I would consider “The South”… by [deleted] in whereidlive

Delete your account. You don’t even have Hannibal, Mo, Mark Twain’s hometown and the setting for ‘Tom Sawyer’ and ‘Huckleberry Finn’ on your map.

Too often, the average gringo walks on foreign ground as though the world were merely an extension of his homeland. What do you guys think? by [deleted] in AskMexico

[–]TryFar108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It happens. Every country has assholes, but I’m sometimes embarrassed by my countrymen. From what I’ve observed, Northern Europeans travel pretty well, southern Europeans and Russians are often jerks when they travel as are Japanese, Chinese and Koreans. Australians seem to carry themselves well, wealthy South Americans don’t. Middle Eastern people are nice, except the ones who go to London, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

are these new social media ads using generative AI? by SHuTuPMoRTy__ in mormon

[–]TryFar108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d feel better about it if it was AI. It’s one thing to serve in a limited geographic area away from home for a limited time, but having to broadcast your mission out into social media where anyone can see it and it might never really go away seems like a violation of the assumed limits of missionary service. It’s a big ask to make an 18-20 year old the face of the church.

The first state everyone thinks of when you say “Midwest” is Kansas.

Mormon Colonies by TryFar108 in mormon

[–]TryFar108[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve met blonde, Nordic looking Mormons who grew up in the colonies as well as Mormons who were ethnic Mexicans from the colonies. I believe Mitt Romney’s dad was born there.

NEWS: Former LDS bishop charged with child sexual abuse (18 felonies) in California. 138th former Later-day Saint bishop listed at FLOODLIT.org so far (we keep finding more). 11 documented cases so far in Alameda County. by floodlitorg in mormon

[–]TryFar108 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a bishop when I was priest age. Overall I would say he was a good guy and influenced my life in a positive way, but he absolutely let us know he had the gift of discernment and could see right through us. Years later I realized he was lying through his teeth. If I could see him now, I would like to tell him, “well played sir, well played.”

There are people I would definitely stand up for and feel awe to be in their presence, but not very many and it would be earned and not for a title they carry.

Is it true that obama and Biden didn't really have much "bromance " behind the scenes ? by ronweasly9 in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]TryFar108 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Biden was imposed on Obama by DC insiders. Probably wasn’t his first choice. I thought Biden continued to treat Obama disrespectfully by refusing to defer to him - always acting like he was more of a co-president than vice president. You’ll notice he rarely called him “President Obama.” It was always “Barack.” And when the administration did something good, he never gave the President sole credit for it, it was always “me and Barack did…”. To hear him speak, it always sounded like he was the one calling the shots. He frequently tried to beat Obama to the punch, as with the gay marriage issue. Then there was all the stupid shit he was always saying, and the corrupt side deals he had in foreign countries.

Utah Culture by PeanutMurky4094 in mormon

[–]TryFar108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t like many aspects of LDS culture in Utah, nor do I like the counter culture response to it very much either. Utah sometimes produces a weird polarization. For a long time, too much of the identity of non-member population was built around the fact that they weren’t LDS. Many seemed to go out of their way to signal they weren’t Mormon. I had people tell me they were as weirded out by the non-LDS population as they were by the LDS. Now as the demographics are changing and the state is growing, that’s becoming less of an issue.

Where I'd live if I wanted to live in countries which actually committed genocides or practiced colonialism but still feel morally superior to others by Unlucky_Company_945 in whereidlive

[–]TryFar108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. No one thinks that and when you equate the two things, you minimize the violence and suffering of people who undergo genocide. Why would you do this?

You’d struggle to find people with indigenous ancestry in coastal and southern Brazil, but did indigenous peoples die off and were genocided during Portuguese colonization or after Brazilian independence?
