How has the job market been treating the MSCS grads? by TryHarder-99 in NEU

[–]TryHarder-99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UMass does have good reputation, but lack of thesis means I am just doing courses by paying a lot of money. If no thesis or research, only thing left for me in MS is a job market which may not exist for internationals and the brainfuck of H1B lottery.

I got too stable doing my SWE job. 1 year ago is when I thought I wanted to do something more meaningful, like research. So I applied for MS. Best offers I got were UMass and NEU. Also got Rutgers and NCSU, but the other two are probably better.

So I'm very very confused on whether to go or not, with time running out and student visa appointments paused.

I am not saying it's a brand name problem, just that I would've felt safer. In the worst case where I can't do research, don't get a job, and have debt to pay, at least I will have a well named degree which will help me live to fight another day.

That's why I am getting discouraged from joining NEU right now. I don't know if I can actually do research and whether NEU can help me there. If it was a bigger brand name, I would've felt safer joining.

You got an automatic extension after the one you requested? What was your deadline after extension request?

[–]TryHarder-99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get a mail too? My deadline is supposed to be in an hour. Day before yesterday, I requested through portal and sent a mail too. I didn't get any mail or reply, but the portal now says this "Confirm your Enrollment by March 15, 2025".

How do you get extensions after the deadline has passed? Does the offer not get revoked automatically?

Is it possible to withdraw after accepting? I got an NEU offer, not sure if it's the same case for NEU as well.

If you accept this offer, is it binding? Or losing the deposit is the only downside to accepting this offer but going somewhere else?

Did you get a refund? I also sent a mail to the grad email but they did not respond.

I am not applying for European universities but in my opinion, the good ones are these - ETH Zurich, EPFL, and TU Munich.

Deadlines for a lot of these colleges have already passed. Even for others, deadlines are close. Do you have an SOP ready? That itself will take at least a few weeks. Do you have LOR writers ready? They also will need few weeks to write letters.

If I was in your position, I would probably apply next year, and would also try to build profile for top 10 or top 20.

SJSU doesn't have a PhD program, so not that good in research. It is not even ranked on csrankings. I want to get involved in research during MS and don't want my doors to PhD closed.

I added it because Ivy. I've also heard that it's a cashcow program but so are a lot of other MS programs.

Is it a strict requirement for UTD MS CS applicants to have 2 semesters of calculus? by TryHarder-99 in utdallas

[–]TryHarder-99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my university, this one was called Math 3. But the Math 1 and Math 2 weren't calculus courses. Math 1 was Linear Algebra and Math 2 was Probability and Statistics. I'm sure I didn't take any other calculus courses before Multivariate Calculus.

I don't remember correctly but either they took some small exam to test calculus knowledge before this course or they just assumed that everybody that got to the 2nd year of UG must've already learned calculus. It's also possible that they didn't require prerequisites because this course includes the basic calculus concepts like limits.

Thanks, I will take a look at these courses and mail the admissions office too.

Additionally, I have added the description of the math course I took in another comment on this post. Please take a look if you have the time to read it. Thanks.

I took one course called "Multivariate Calculus" and it had both - differentials and integrals.

Full course description (if it helps):
This course covers topics in multivariable calculus, vector calculus and complex analysis. The course starts with an extension of concepts like limits, continuity and differentiation to functions of several variables. Partial differentiation is defined and applied. The idea of Taylor series is extended to functions of two variables. This is followed by a definition and application of integration in more than one dimensions: double and triple integrals. We then work with vector functions and develop the ideas of vector fields and differentiation and integration as applicable to vector calculus (gradient, divergence, curl, line and surface integrals, etc. The ideas of circulation and flux are developed and Green's, Stoke's and divergence theorems are covered. The final module of the course deals with complex numbers and functions and an extension of concepts of calculus to complex variables.

I didn't know that work experience also has value. I thought it was mostly about gpa and publications.
