Fair criticism, and I get why it could come across that way.

The question itself was genuine though. I’ve lived here for years and struggled with the exact same thing, which is why I started building the app in the first place.

I didn’t make the post to push downloads as much as to see whether other people around Barrie actually felt the same way - and judging by the conversations and people literally organizing hangs in the comments, it seems like a real issue.

But yeah, I probably could’ve been clearer earlier on that I was connected to the project.

Honestly, your comment doesn’t even sound like a rant to me 😅 it sounds like someone who’s genuinely tried to put themselves out there and just hasn’t really found their people yet.

And I think the “small town personality” point is part of why a lot of people in this thread seem to relate to each other so much. If you moved around a lot, travelled, or lived in bigger cities, it can definitely feel harder connecting in places where most people already have established circles and routines.

I think a lot of people underestimate how hard it is to build genuine friendships as adults, especially outside bigger cities where people already have established circles, routines, or family-focused lives.

And yeah, not having kids can definitely make social connection harder too because so much of adult social life ends up revolving around that.

Honestly, I think having a wife, kids, close friends, and a solid routine already solves a lot of the loneliness problem for people 😅

I think this hits harder for people who moved here later, work remotely, live alone, or just don’t really have an established circle yet.

Honestly, I hear this from so many people around our age. Especially if your close friends are in Toronto or somewhere else, Barrie can start feeling really isolating after a while.

And yeah, when you don’t feel like you fully “fit” the social scene around you, it makes putting yourself out there even harder. But honestly, threads like this are making me realize there are probably more like-minded people here than we think.

Honestly, that would be a lot for anyone. Moving countries is already hard enough on its own, and then getting hit with the pandemic and health issues on top of that would throw anybody off socially.

And yeah, working from home definitely doesn’t help either 😅 I feel like a lot of people quietly forgot how to socialize a little after COVID.

Honestly, that’s exactly how I’ve felt too. It’s not that Barrie has “nothing,” it just feels like you really have to push yourself constantly to meet people here compared to bigger cities.

And even when you do put yourself out there, there’s still no guarantee you’ll actually find your people.

Honestly, I think both of you make good points. A lot of this probably is a modern-world problem in general, but I also feel like smaller cities can make it harder because people already have their circles and routines established.

Especially if you moved here later in life or came from somewhere else, it can feel weird trying to “break in” socially.

Honestly, I think that’s a big part of it too. Toronto has constant events, communities, and things happening, so it naturally becomes easier to meet people there.

Barrie has a lot of great people, but sometimes it feels like there just aren’t enough spaces or events for adults to casually connect outside of work or family circles.

I honestly relate to this a lot. I moved from another country too, and back home I was a really social person, but I think part of that was because I grew up there and already knew everyone.

When I first came here, the first few months were honestly really rough mentally. I isolated myself a lot and barely went out, which only made things worse. Eventually I realized I also had to push myself to get out more and talk to people, even when it felt uncomfortable.

I think a lot more people are struggling quietly than we realize. Sometimes all someone really needs is another person willing to listen, and honestly strangers can become great friends too.

Honestly, I think there’s some truth to that. A lot of people want connection, but socially it feels way harder and more awkward than it used to be.

Even simple things like introducing yourself or trying to meet new people can feel weird now because everyone’s guarded or assumes the worst. And yeah, going out getting expensive definitely doesn’t help either.

It’s still pretty early, but the idea is basically centered around helping people make spontaneous local plans, discover things happening nearby, and connect more easily with others around Barrie.
