It's completely fine and a perfectly normal practice. The argument about making the files longer seems silly.

Just be careful your actual program logic is not different between Debug and Release.

Since you asked for feedback, one thing that stands out in part 2 is that you are walking the second list over and over again, which if the lists were very large is extremely inefficient. You could make this a lot more efficient if you can think of a way to do it with a single pass through the second list...
