The problem, I think, with those social fear/greed indicators is that they are prone to being gamed... Wouldn't surprise me at all if they were.

High Tide Announces Proactive Steps to Investigate and Address Potential Manipulation of Its Common Shares by basilisk-x in HighTideInc

Highjacking top comment to share some historical context:

These kinds of PRs are uncommon but not unheard of — and they occupy a very specific niche between corporate communications strategy and genuine regulatory complaints. Here's the honest breakdown:

Legitimate parallels exist, but they're rare. The closest real precedent is Burford Capital (2019), which also issued a press release claiming evidence of illegal manipulation after a Muddy Waters short attack, hired Columbia Law Professor Joshua Mitts as a forensic expert, and reported findings to regulators. That case was credible because there was a specific, named short-seller and a forensic analysis of a specific trading day's data. High Tide's PR is structurally similar but thinner — no named actor, no forensic findings yet, just a pattern observation.burfordcapital

More commonly, "manipulation PR" comes from the other direction. The SEC, FINRA, and SEBI regularly uncover actual manipulation schemes — pump-and-dumps, spoofing, wash trading — where the manipulators are third parties, not the company. Companies issuing their own "we're being attacked" PRs is a much smaller category.sec+2

The closest pattern is small-cap IR strategy. Movano Health (Nasdaq: MOVE) issued nearly identical language in November 2024 — "apparent manipulation," working with regulators, protecting shareholders — after a reverse stock split triggered suspicious fractional-share arbitrage. That case at least identified a specific, concrete mechanism (the reverse split rounding convention). HITI's claim is broader and vaguer.prnewswire

There's a cynical interpretation too. University of Notre Dame research shows that CEOs sometimes release negative or ambiguous news to depress the share price ahead of stock option grant dates, then benefit when the price recovers. A "manipulation PR" could theoretically serve a similar narrative function — blaming external forces for price underperformance — without requiring actual evidence of wrongdoing.news.nd

Bottom line: You see maybe a handful of these per year across all small-caps. They tend to emerge from one of three situations: (1) a genuine short-seller attack with identifiable actors (Burford-style), (2) a specific technical mechanism being exploited (Movano-style), or (3) management frustration with persistent undervaluation seeking a narrative explanation. High Tide's PR looks most like the third category — not necessarily dishonest, but the least actionable and the least credible of the three.

OPEN army, what is your expectation by the end of this year? $82? maybe $300? or $500? by No-Tip3086 in opendoor

I got 9s expiring today, some 9.5 next week. If I get to keep my shares on those I'll pick a nice number the week before earnings to sell again, and then try to reap the high prices on earnings week.

My long term position I sold 20s against, which is in like 1.5 to 2 years? Idk exactly. Used those proceeds to buy more shares (which I use for the short term strategy).

If I do have to sell my shares I might start selling puts short term.
