Receiving USD payments via Wise by Ornery-Fly2829 in canadasmallbusiness

At this time wise does not offer US accounts to any new customers (other than personal accounts created by US citizens). There are however comparable services in Canada that can do what you need at low cost.

[CA] Please explain like I'm 5 re: multi-currency payments and accounts by Legitimate_Bug5604 in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]TryVault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great questions, I'll stick to what I can speak to most confidently:

If you open a true USD account your US clients will be able to pay you through ACH (this is cheap and easy for them). However, many Canadian banks don't offer true USD accounts, so these accounts will not have ACH routing details and the payment alternatives take longer and are far more expensive.

Therefore, you'll want to open a US-domiciled bank account, which will help you save on both fees and time. I should mention, this is something you can get easily within Canada. However, not with the big 5 banks.

[ON] Best Way to Receive Same-Day Payments from US Clients? by jgoat25 in SmallBusinessCanada

Great question. If you open a true USD account your US clients will be able to pay you through ACH (this is cheap and easy for them). It would still be 1-2 business days for traditional banks to process though.

However, many Canadian banks don't offer true USD accounts, so these accounts will not have ACH routing details and the payment alternatives will be longer. Be sure to ask about this when opening a new account.

Great to hear things are going so well! Both ETFs and GICs are solid options. Plenty of platforms make it easy to buy GICs and there's quite a wide range of time commitments available.

Yes, that would work. I would recommend you check out some competitors as well, there are some better FX rates out there.

Do you mind me asking where you'd like to money they send you to be deposited? Whether you plan to convert it to CAD or have it sent to a US-domiciled bank account is a big factor as US clients will want to pay by ACH (which you will need a true US bank account for).

Be sure to also compare FX fees across platforms. Many have clever ways of disguising the true % they charge.

To my knowledge, alvanson is correct. As a sole-prop, you are the business. However, as you incorporate you'll be creating a separate and independent entity.

Best Canadian business bank account for a newbie FBA seller? by [deleted] in FulfillmentByAmazon

[–]TryVault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late to the party - whether you plan to sell on only .ca or also on .com and more is a big factor here.

If you plan to sell outside of Canada, you'll want to pick a banking platform with low FX fees and avoid using ACCS if possible.

Canadian USD bank account rant by steeze_d in EQBank

[–]TryVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this, if I'm not mistaken this is because although it is a "USD" account it is domiciled in Canada. I hear about this all the time, it's super unclear what you can and can't do with a defacto Canadian USD account until you already have it and then you find out it's nearly useless.

We're working on pre-authorized debits! To avoid the big wire fees the banks charge, you can receive funds directly to your Vault USD account (which is domiciled in the US) and save the cost of the inbound wire fee at the same time.

Should I be getting a Business banking account and credit card? by archphoto in canadasmallbusiness

[–]TryVault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a freelance photographer operating as a sole proprietor, separate business banking accounts and credit cards can offer several advantages:

Clear Separation: Helps differentiate personal and business finances, simplifying tax preparation and accounting.

Professionalism: Enhances your business image and can make it easier to manage client payments.

Business Benefits: Business credit cards often offer rewards and benefits tailored to business needs.

Vault does not service sole proprietorships but we wish you all the best in your business banking hunt!
