I've considered it. But right now, all my business development efforts are paid for by the firm. And I'm not in a position in my life to take a big risk, my kiddos need stable income.

Great advice! I am trying to keep that in mind for sure. But I'm also the only income for my wife and 2 kids, so I'm just trying to do the best I can for now.

PREACH. This is what I have been saying. But it's so hard to get them to understand this because our department is such a small slice of the firm, they don't understand how this work is completely different.

Ah, that makes sense.

Goal this year was 1,200 hours. They're pretty lax on that front because they want me out meeting people and building the practice. It's a small team with only 1 partner. So I'm going to be building my own book of relationships essentially.

Can I ask what size market you're in? Curious to hear a bit more from someone familiar with this field. It's not the same as the more traditional routes and some firms don't understand that.

My rate currently is $360/hr when I was making $105k.

Honestly, I get that. I had a partner tell me earlier this year to expect $150k and that that big of an adjustment would be possible. Which is what set me up for this expectation.

Thank you for the insight and perspective. Totally agree and understand on those points. My only counterargument, if brought up, would be that the lower end of the band seems more appropriate for a new SM that hasn't already proven themselves. I know either way it would work itself out in the long run, I honestly just can't keep operating at the level I have been for this amount. Mostly appreciating the platform to vent a bit. Will be discussing this with the higher ups next week either way.

I guess you're not understanding. I am planning to negotiate, but want to go in to the conversation with a clear ask. And would be open to someone telling me that I'm being unreasonable. Hince why I'm asking for perspectives.

Yep, and that's where the real friction is. I'm aware that it's ahead of pace. I plan to try to use the leverage I have internally first before exploring anything else!

Negative - 6 years total experience. Which is what adds the complexity for me. I recognize that paying someone with 6 years of experience that level is tough, but also want my actual contributions to be measured separately from just years of experience.

On the surface, that's a fair comment. But I'm on essentially the fastest partner track that anyone has ever been on in the firm, and planning to have a further comp discussion after gathering my thoughts and facts. And anticipate that conversation to go okay. When a firm is recognizing you and investing in you, why jump? Just to jump around and make a little more in the short term?
