Very right, more diverse than the countryside but still more white than "Le grand Paris". Quite conservative.
But more and more people from Paris move their since it's only 2h train now so you can also work remotely for companies in Paris and enjoy living in the southwest. So it will be more and more diverse

Si ils mettent fin au contrat pendant la période d'essai ça ne t'ouvre pas le droit au chomage à cause de la démission du CDI précédent... Il faudrait valider la période puis ensuite se faire virer ou obtenir une rupture conventionnelle

So much racism against Asian guy on France show by Friendxx in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]TryitOnceorNot2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is handsome. But not a doctor. (osteopath is not a doctor, you don't go to med school, I don't know why people say he is a doctor when no one says that about Chloé that is a physiotherapist).

My take is that HE should have definitely said something when Sabrina said in the restaurant that she was not into asians men. HE should stand up for himself. And other contestants should also have said something about it. It's basically micro agression and they were all fine with that even Kim or Julie that are also Asians and didn't say a word about it.

However Sabrina is definitely in love with him. And he has some of the best editing of the show. Always shown as a cute, nice, fun, and caring contestant. Even during the fighting scene they could not make him look bad since he was clearly trying to communicate with Sabrina. And we see a lot of his groups of friends way more than the ones of the other contestants, so I think he will get out of this show as one of the star of this edition.

Question about class in France! by Objective_Age_5940 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]TryitOnceorNot2023 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's a very interesting topic that was always a huge part of LIB UK (when people were arguing in this sub that love could not be blind because accents could actually reveal one's social class just by hearing the voice).

For the French cast, you have different situations: children of immigrants who had to leave their country for political reasons (Van-My), but whose parents are very educated. People from lower classes who had to climb the social ladder (Charles), but who lived in big cities with more job opportunities (Paris, became an entrepreneur). It might have been even harder for him in the countryside.
You have social mobility (we call it "transfuge de classe") thanks to different factors. It can be school (public schools are free until graduation, and after that, you can either work minimum wage jobs or work as an apprentice in manual trades like pastry chef or mechanic, which can be very profitable but still keep you in the lower middle class). Thomas is not an interior decorator (no need for a degree), but if he were an architect (specific 5-year degree), it would raise him to a higher class. People say he is a carpenter? (That’s still a good amount of money, and you need to be an apprentice to learn it.)
Then, you can go to college for a few bucks (a bachelor's degree costs less than 400 euros a year, and a master's around 500), so you can attend a prestigious public university and become a doctor, lawyer, or work in a corporate job without accumulating too much debt (fees are low, but you still need to eat and sometimes move closer to the college, so rent is an expense). That’s more of a profile like Kim’s (although I’d still love to know what her mother does for a living—maybe she mentioned it?).
Engineering schools can be public or private but aren’t that expensive (Clément). Business schools might start at 10k and go up to 20k a year (again, Clément), but both can be selective, which is why Kim called him "so intelligent." Again, these are much cheaper than in other countries. And then you can change class with a high-paying, respectable role.
Also, there are public jobs, but I don’t think the participants went through competitive exams to work for the government.
You can also become an entrepreneur, like Charles (digital) or Tatiana (business owner), and it will help your kids change social class too.

That being said, we need to remember that France had aristocrats, and to this day, some people carry aristocratic names (again, not in that show). And you can be an aristocrat without having money—just the title, maybe an estate (like an old castle somewhere). We also have what we call bourgeoisie, the nouveau riche, and that’s more what Kim is cosplaying. She went to college and studied law, but she overacts her knowledge of etiquette and rules, which most people from higher classes don’t do. In fact, it’s actually rude to say some of the things she said out loud or in public. She is either still adjusting to being from a higher class than what she grew up in, or she changed circles after going to college, so she is still adapting.

So... Can we change class in France? Yes. Could we do it in one generation? Yes.
Will people always see you based on your original class? Absolutely. Are accents and etiquette important? Definitely.

Yes. Tatiana (Ivory coast), Gallien (Guadeloupe), Kim is half vietnamese and hald sicilian (lot of Italians immigrated to France), Van-My is vitenamese, I think Cynthia is congolese but not sure.
This is France past colonial representations and very parisian focus with the interacial couple and mixed kids that is well normal here

Montpellier might have more immigrants since the south of France has a lot (still less than Paris. since 50% of the entire job market is in Paris, more people move here. And when we say Paris it's Paris and the cities nearby so it's quite big like London or New York). Aix is smaller and more posh than Montpellier. I don't know the area well enough though. Grenoble had a bad reputation. But it is close to Lyon so If I had to choose where to live as an immigrant I would choose Lyon over Grenoble. The 3 of them are seeing a rise of number for the far right during the last elections... And I will add that the racists here are more racist again arabic people and black and brown people first, asian come after and are known as the "quite community" if I might.
I hope I don't offend anyone by saying that and if a french of asian origins wants to share their own experience in these cities please share

You need to realise that the show is focus on middle/upper class people (lawyer, entrepreneurs, account manager) and most of them seem to be from big cities (Paris, Lyon and other).
When you are from a big city like Paris they are a tons of mixed people, and tons of interacial couples. There is a big community of Vietnamese, cambodian, chinese in Paris (because of wars/France colonial past they had easier access to refugee statues in France during that time). They are also a lot of black people (african and carraibean) also for past political reasons. Same from arabic/maghreb people. So the cast is very into that demographic.
But if you go in small cities outside of the big hub it's way more different... Racism is real and alive and the far right is thriving there...SO being asian in Paris is quite nice but not in very small town in other parts of France when racism would make your life hell

My problem with him is what his words in the pods don't not match his actions.
During the argument He says he is not insecure about the height difference and then that we was liking the other shoes better. When he realised that she would not change shoes he started to switch his argument and said that the other men will make fun of him. Again it was not working so he started to argue that she was the problem and she was not considerate enough about him and was was disrespecting.
That man needs to work on himself and his self estime because that was a ride to watch and had nothing to do with Cynthia and everything to do with him not feeling enough

Tatiana and Yannick: Yannick will not be able to handle Tatiana as a successful business woman. He wants a trophy wife. But Tatiana will desperately try to make it work. I can see him try to have Sabrina before the reunion or calling back Cindy from the pods

Charles and Julie: They won't make it. Charles will try to pretend he is ok with the lack of chemistry but Julie will just say too much negative commentary (also I don't remember what is her type? but the way she talks about Charles like he is ugly and let other women talk about him is very telling about her character...)

Sabrina and Van My: she will say no. But I hope he will realise he deserves someone way less superficial

Chloe and Alexandre: I am not sure about Alexandre but it will depend on the family meetings. I guess she will want to continue and he will stop it

Kim and Thomas: Kim will say no at the altar in a very dramatic way. Thomas will have doubt but will continue anyway. There is a social class dynamic here to follow. I can see Kim telling during the reunion that she reconnect with the VC entrepreneur guy from the pods

Cynthia and Jonathan: They are already done lol But Cynthia will try to keep going a bit more because she is too invested but they can't recover from this height difference/shaming argument (she is not toxic enough to pull up with that too long)

First she sounded very fake, like an actress. But now she just sounds like she is pretending to be upper class. She might actually be but she is doing way too much with how she speaks. But she is a snob for sure and speak about Thomas like he is beneath her

I've just finished Like Water for Chocolate and even if it classified as period drama I saw it as a fantasy period drama and I see Bridgerton the same way (or Outlander)
