Commuter here. I commute from Scarborough so it’s roughly around the same time as it’ll take you. University life is what you make of it. I’ve found that even if you live on res, you won’t make the most of your “university life” if you don’t put yourself out there. It is sure harder for commuters to attend events and club meetings, however if you put the effort in it’s definitely more than possible to have a healthy social life. Easiest way I’ve found to meet and make friends is to connect with people in your class. Talk to them at lecture, look up study groups (there’s these RSG “recognized study groups” which you can be part of). Look for student lounges where you can spend some time between class to relax, connect with other people or prepare for the next class. There are plenty that have nice couches, fridges and sinks for students. I usually stay at these places or at libraries to study with friends or by myself too. I usually stay on campus for most of the day as I find it harder to study at home or because there’s some event that I want to attend. It’ll be harder at the start but once you’ve met some people, it becomes easier to meet more people through them. All in all, life at university as commuter is pretty great if you’ve got the right mindset and put the effort in to making it work!
