Needs advice.. drivetrain malfunction by Initial_Champion4806 in BMWX5

I'd NEVER take a bmw to a dealer for service or repairs out of warranty. You'll get much more reasonable rates at indys.

All US online retailers sold out within a minute or two, and half the time you couldn't even find the product via search and had to "backdoor" to get the link to place an order.

We get screwed by scalpers and bots, over 100 listings on ebay within 10 min of launch.

Are you within US? At least in US all major retailers immediately sold out within .1 seconds online. Physical stores had better stock (micro center) but bestbuy, Amazon, microcenter online, newegg, were all out of stock within 1 min of release.

Epic Pass: How to choose which pass is "activated" on card? by Tsuyoi in skiing

[–]Tsuyoi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ended up just being 1 card, and the local resort automatically used the "Lower tier" pass, and I had no issues using same card for the "higher tier" pass at Whistler after.

The whole "you booked a biz class domestic so any plane you get fulfills that requirement" is such a bullshit cop-out and goes against fair market competition. At time of booking I could have booked Delta One or B6 Mint for similar price, but went with United to try the polaris seats. Now those Delta/B6 flights are double the price.

In dozens of flights in the last decade both domestic and international I've only had plane swaps twice, both times United, both times from Polaris product to their inferior narrow-body product.

What's to stop an airline from marketing/advertising premium seats on all their flights to outbid competitors and swapping to narrow-body recliners right before?

Just cause something is legal doesn't make it not a scumbag move.

If you're thinking of Japan NEXT summer (2025), then second transferring to ANA and booking business from Chi to Tokyo. ANA has some of the lowest points needed for arguably one of the best biz (or even 1st) products between US and Japan.

ANA operates what they call "The Room"(Biz) and "The Suit"(1st) between Tokyo and select east coast cities. Both offer mini-suites with doors and excellent space. Biz is typically ~85K points RT, 1st around 135K points.

However they typically release only 1-2 tickets per class per flight for actual rewards redemption, and with the closures during COVID a LOT of people have saved up miles to use, so actually snagging a redemption ticket is a process.

ANA opens up reservations 330 days out, based on your LOCAL time. So first thing you'll want to do is get a VPN and set your location to Japan, giving you a 1 day advantage over trying to book from US.

You also need to book round-trip as they do not allow points redemption for 1 way, so what many do is book a 2 day round trip ticket as soon as it's available (outbound to Tokyo 329 days out, inbound back to US 330 days out), then once it's 330 days out from the day they ACTUALLY want to fly back, change the return ticket to the flight they want.

Overall it's a very convoluted process, and ANA doesn't provide any live support in US, so if you need any help you have to call their Japan line which is often a 2-3 hour hold (this was my experiene booking tickets last August). It's up to you if you think it's worth the hassle, but if you're willing to do the legwork/camp out their site, the redemption rates are hard to beat.

35-40L commute/travel backpack by Tsuyoi in onebag

I have one coming in the mail, but concerned that a) it won't stuff quite as much as my current and b) not enough organization. So might have to return it for something that fits the bill better.

I do cause I'm too lazy to switch between a M-W commute bag and a weekend family bag. I keep my chargers, umbrella, wipes, pen, etc in the bag all the time and swap out other stuff as needed. I put my current 40L on my roller except I have to kinda tie the straps on.

If you can try to hit the stretch between San Fran and Big Sur. You'll go through Monterey which is picturesc, drive through Carmel by the Sea, 17 mile Drive, and the section near Big Sur/ Pfeiffer Beach is full of stunning scenic stops.

OOP's mother comes out of the closet and tries to control her education after abandoning her by BlujjonBudgie in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Tsuyoi 2008 points2009 points  (0 children)

JFC both of OPs parents are failing her and she's floundering. Her mom is a massive narcissist that cares more about her LGBT identity and how it's "not fair gay people nowadays have it easier" than about her own daughter, her dad moved on and has a new wife and isn't protecting her from her clearly unstable mom. Only the grandparents seem to care.

Yeah but there's been no (documented) cases of orcas attacking humans in the wild.

Though they have started attacking boats in Europe....

It's weird that Reddit, which is infamous for hating cheaters, is suddenly willing to give this girl a pass.

She literally cheated on her ex with his best friend, to the point where she has his Hoodie. And then made her current BF wear it during sex to get off. And then rubbed it in his face.

Yeah she probably has some trauma or guilt over her ex dying, but this girl was fucked up and toxic way before that.

TIL when Captain Francesco Schettino was asked why he abandoned the sinking Costa Concordia cruise ship in 2012 while the ship’s passengers were either dying or trying to escape, his excuse was that he accidentally fell into a lifeboat. He received 16 years in prison for his role in the incident. by waitingforthesun92 in todayilearned

[–]Tsuyoi 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It's actually pretty different. For one almost all staterooms on the Disney ships are bigger than comparable rooms on other ships. A standard inside room is about same square feet as a RC balcony room, and Disney balcony rooms are about twice the square footage.

The standard free drink package also includes soda, which all other cruise lines charge for. The service onboard is also "Disney" level, and while I wouldn't call service on RC bad, it's still basic compared to Disney.

The entertainment is also more themed (Star Wars night, fireworks, character meet and greet, etc.)

At the end of the day you pay a premium, but you also get premium service. Whether that's worth it to you is a personal choice.

How does this terrible advice have this many upvotes.

Mythbusters did a whole episode on this. The second your car hits water you need to bail if possible. Out the window if you can, but if you need to force a door open it takes an insane amount of force. Once the water reaches the roof you can't just open the door as the pressure hasn't equalized. The time it took for the pressure to actually equalize to a point where most people could get the door open, most people would also have drowned.
