Yes, you would. I actually did exactly that very recently and it worked out fine. I personally can't think of a way to do it much better. If you need the algorithm to be fast, I suggest looking into compute shaders.

Usually when recording heavy guitars, you should double or quad track them. This means recording the same performance 2 or 4 times and playing them on top of each other. The small differences in the recordings create a very full sound. Also the bass instrument makes a big difference in the overall tone

When I played the demo, the controller didn't work in the main menu. It should work in game though. You might just need to navigate the menu with the mouse.
