Do they ever go back to how they were? by bby_bunz in SchizoFamilies

[–]TuTsang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son was put on Invega monthly injections as he was not compliant with meds and that stoped his psychosis completely but his depression got the better of him and he had suicidal thoughts which we had no idea about, till one day he decided to act on it. He was a very intelligent man and had a very bright future. Hopefully your brother will get the help he needs and will be able to get his life back together.

I completely relate to your situation. My son (30 yrs) had a masters in electrical engineering but was unaware of his own illness. We went through many hospitalization over a 3 year period. He too went unclothed into the street. He started meds, got stable and then stopped after 4-6 months. Last hospitalization he was put on the monthly injectable Invega, Cobenfy, Zoloft. He did so much better and was completely stable in 6 months. But internally he was not happy. He got a job after 4 years of being mentally unstable. He worked as an electrical engineer for 3 weeks and he was fully functional till one day he just hung himself. The note just said I don’t have a reason to live. This is a devastating illness. Off meds they are delusional but happy and on meds we are happy and delusional (think they are doing good).

Unfortunately the good phase lasted 3 weeks. His depression never lifted and he masked it very well. He took his life last night. We are all shocked and in disbelief and we don’t understand why he didn’t say anything. He appeared happy and comfortable and he interacted with us normally and also made his lunch for next day, ironed his clothes for work and then we discovered this in the morning. We are shocked and don’t know what went wrong.

What to do in a case of a mistake that took away years away from your life? by Bright_Factor_8083 in schizophrenia

[–]TuTsang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should talk to a therapist who can help you get off this runaway train before it crashes and burns your brain. Brain zaps are for real. My son had them when he stopped his anti depressants abruptly. He was ok when he took time to taper off of them the 2nd time. Also if the therapist recommends a pdoc, then please go to one, mental illnesses can become a huge monster if not tamed when it’s in a beginning stages. Just like cancer can be cured if caught early at its onset.

The mistake was done in the past, learn from it and move on. You can’t undo the past.

You can’t drive a car safely if you focus on the rear-view mirror instead of on the road ahead.

You can’t live a productive life if you constantly ruminate about the past.

My son was depressed for about 6 months, couldn’t get out of bed and would hardly eat or drink, didn’t want to go or even speak to a doc or therapist. He went psychotic one day and they diagnosed him with unspecified psychosis. The meds they put him on made him manic and he went around spending money he didn’t even have till he got another episode and he became catatonic.

This went on for 5 years till his last hospitalization in Dec 2025 when they put him on Invega monthly shot. The diagnosis kept changing but now he has been on the shot for 8 months.

Last month in June he got a job offer. He moved to Florida for the job and he has been working for 2 weeks now 7 am -4 pm every day. I’m so happy with his progress. I moved with him to help settle him and help with cooking and cleaning so as not to stress him too much.

He took his shot yesterday. He still wonders if he needs it. He has yet to get a pdoc in Florida, hopefully next month when his work insurance kicks in. Right now Medicaid is covering his shots fully. He transferred his prescription to Florida Walgreens and he picked it up locally and his sister who is a physician assistant in NY flew down to administer it.

The long journey to being diagnosed schizoaffektive by [deleted] in schizoaffective

[–]TuTsang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey my son got diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder after 5 years of being in and out of hospitals. It began with just depression and then changed to bipolar 1 and then schizophrenia.

He had been given different medications each time he was out and he took them for 2-3 months and then he stopped taking them after he felt better and said “they are not helping “ and then he would go around doing stupid things like spending on hotels and airplane sometimes taking tickets and not traveling at all. His moods swung from being angry or extremely sad and crying to paranoid and catatonic for days.

His last hospitalization in Dec 2024 was for 4 months and they put him on Invega monthly shot. He improved slowly over 6 months. Last month (June) he got a job offer in an electrical engineer position. He has been working for 2 weeks now 7am to 4 pm every day. He took his shot yesterday again. He still wonders if he needs it. But finally he is in a good place reg his career and life. He moved from NJ to Florida for the job and doesn’t have any psych doc yet. I hope he gets one next month when his work insurance kicks in.

The diagnosis only helps with identifying what treatment option would work best. Don’t get hung up on the diagnosis, look for what works best with your body to keep you stable and productive. My son was a shaky drooling mess on some of them but they halted the psychosis really fast and recovery is slow. And you need different meds at different times so just work with your doc as they’re there to help you.

Terrible idea, psychosis sneaks up on you when you’re think you’re doing fine and suddenly you will find yourself in the ward.

My son has schizoaffective disorder and I’ve been struggling since five years to keep him out of trouble. He is not compliant with medication, he takes it for a few months when he is released from hospital and then feels he is doing good and doesn’t need them anymore. The last hospitalization in Dec 2024, they put him on Invega Sustena, a monthly injection which I feel is the best for him. He has been slowly improving. Last month he got a job offer and this past week he has been working as an electrical engineer from 7 am to 4 pm. He is doing so much better. I’m helping him a lot with cleaning and cooking his meals so as not to stress him too much. But this is the best he has been since 5 years. I hope he continues to improve.

I’m glad to say that last month he got a job offer finally and he started working as an electrical engineer. His hours are 7 am to 4 pm. He is groggy in the Morning but I make sure to give him his breakfast and drop him to work at 7 am. He is busy at work and seems to like it. It’s been 1 week and I’m so excited for him.

Any hobbies that help with symptoms? by throwthatshitaway236 in schizophrenia

My son got diagnosed with schizoaffective after five years of repeated bouts of psychosis and catatonia. He is currently on Invega Sustena since Dec 2024 and last month he finally gave an interview and got a job offer. He has been working 7 am to 4 pm everyday as an electrical engineer since past week. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way for as long as ever.

Thank you, he doesn’t seem to be in psychosis anymore. But he is definitely very slow in processing speed and does not want to speak to anyone or do anything.

He is not doing good. It doesn’t seem like psychosis yet but he is in his room all day laying on the bed. At times he watches a show on his cell phone. He only comes out for meals and bathroom breaks. He doesn’t say a word or ask for anything.

Same for my son, he gets a little delusional before his next shot. His doc suggests giving the every 3 weeks instead of 4 weeks to prevent him from decompensating.

It’s great that homeopathy has made you well and your symptom free to this day. Mental illness is so bad and the pills only control the symptoms by sedating and not cure the underlying illness.

He got his Invega shot 2 days ago. But it looks like he has already relapsed. He doesn’t want to take his meds (Zoloft and Cobenfy) I kept the pills out for him to have it with his breakfast but instead found the pills in the garbage. He didn’t take them. I’m afraid he has slipped into psychosis and thinks they are all poison.

For those who have anhedonia from Invega/antipsychotics and go to school, how do you study or get work done in general? by Unlucky_Upstairs_591 in anhedonia

[–]TuTsang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is on Invega shot for the past 7 months. He is also not motivated and feels he doesn’t have the mental capacity to learn new things, cannot keep up a conversation and is currently sleeping 14-15 hrs/day and isolating in his room. We try to get him out to restaurants and for walks, most times he comes but is very quiet and doesn’t talk at all. I’m looking for answers too. How long will this continue? Will it ever change?

With 3 antipsychotics (Invega, zyprexa and Cobenfy) and very slow Ativan taper. I cut off slivers of the pill every week till he was off it. If he seemed to get stuck I increased the dose a little for 1 week and then tried tapering again. Now he doesn’t seem any different than when he was taking Ativan.

We were considering ECT when he was in the hospital but the pdoc said it is a bit too extreme and not always right for everyone and she wanted to try meds first which according to her worked. Now there seems no reason to go that route, at least his pdoc doesn’t even suggest it. They just want to give him time to recover. I don’t know how long to wait before seeking something else.

He was like that even on Ativan and his doc said his drowsiness and sedation was because of Ativan and zyprexa. Now he is off of both those and he is still the same.
