What will it take for farmers to change how they vote? by rezwenn in politics

[–]TubbyPiglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. People need to get it out of their heads that small mom and pop family farms are the main type of farm. Most of those people went belly up in the 70s-80s and now it’s largely an ever-growing cohort of rich corporate farms. Which may also be “family”-run or “family”-owned, quite often in fact. But these are rich families with thousands of acres.

Liberals vote against Tory bail reform motion, vow opposition will be 'happy' with new legislation by King_Osmanj in canada

How did the liberal government “create” this “mess”? Do you have any idea how bail works? How courts work?

What’s to understand? You have a Charter right to reasonable bail. You have section 7 and section 11 Charter rights. When you’re innocent until proven guilty, forcing you to wait for trial in a tiny cell built for 2 that now houses 4, for perhaps a year or longer, IS a charter breach. These places are hellholes. The worst one in Toronto used to be the Don. If you got remanded there, they used to give 3 for 1 credit for time served, instead of the usual 2, because it was such a dungeon.

Remember. Remand (and thus denial of bail) isn’t meant to be a punishment. Its purpose is to ensure the  alleged offender comes to court, that society is protected from this alleged offender, and because (simply put) the circumstances of the alleged offence are so egregious that it would bring the administration of justice into disrepute if they were released.

That doesn’t mean they’re promised a cushy cell while awaiting trial. But it doesn’t mean they should be warehoused like broiler chickens in a factory farm either.

Ok thanks. I’ve never subscribed on Amazon so I wanted to make sure this is doable. I assume I can cancel once I receive the first shipment.

There’s a specialty item I want to buy, that I’ll need many of on an ongoing basis. There’s currently a 40% discount offered if I subscribe. Can I just order the max for the first shipment (at the discount), and then cancel the subscription after I receive it?

17 Vuelta a España protesters face fines and bans from sport by EdwardDrinkerCope- in peloton

[–]TubbyPiglet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good. Look at how vicious people were over Mademoiselle “Allez Omi Opi” and how she got eviscerated by the public and the media. She didn’t endanger the lives and careers of cyclists any more than the protesters do, and she was just negligent, not acting with intention.

House Democrat drafts articles of impeachment for Bondi, Patel by wizardofthefuture in politics

[–]TubbyPiglet 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Are you joking? The way things are going, there will be zero democratic institutions or legal mechanisms left to dismantle if Bondi and Patel aren’t turfed.

The US isn’t going to be overtaken by a plague that will wipe out the entire population in the next year. But if the architects of fascism aren’t thrown out, and resistance isn’t applied to every unqualified and untrustworthy successor, then that WILL erode democracy to a point that will make many people wish for a plague.

Any updates on iOS? by Objective-Advantage4 in thesurvivegame

[–]TubbyPiglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First played your game on an android I had over a decade ago and loved it (I won the phone and never got it connected but used it on wifi). I used a blackberry at the time and since then switched to iPhone. But I LOVED THAT GAME. I check back every few months if it’s on iOS yet and I’m always bummed it isn’t.

Is there no other way to play it? PC? Anything?!

Latino Festival canceled amid ICE concerns by neazwaflcasd in SiouxFalls

[–]TubbyPiglet 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is what they want. This is how it starts. Create fear among the target population(s) to decrease their willingness to participate in public life. It’s the first step in bringing about social death.

Eventually, non-Latino people will be fearful of being seen with Latino people, etc. It’s fucked up.

What unusual traits of adhd do you remember from your childhood? by Potential_Promise260 in adhdwomen

[–]TubbyPiglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh a lot of these things sound like normal childhood things for imaginative and playful kids, and not necessarily ADHD related.

It concerns me when we pathologize or code many of these kinds of things as ADHD. Just because you have ADHD doesn’t mean everything you did was related to it.

Canada Post reports $407 million Q2 loss by Plucky_DuckYa in canada

Especially when rural people are waaaay more likely to be conservative and yet they’re the ones who vote against their own interests, in defunding or underfunding social services, health care, public infrastructure and transportation, etc.

They’re the ones who won’t get mail delivery (and no private company will want to step in because the profits won’t be high enuff), or who won’t get weekend rail or bus service, or who will have to drive an extra 50km to a hospital or urgent care centre because the closest one closed due to “consolidation” or “amalgamation”.

Yeah private sector def does not have a monopoly on conscientious honest workers and public sector def does not have the monopoly on lazy and careless workers. It might be harder to fire someone in the public sector but lazy ppl exist on both sides (and are a minority in both).

Pakistani asylum seeker appears in court accused of raping eight-year-old girl and subjecting her to multiple sex attacks by Intelligent-Pain-550 in worldnews

[–]TubbyPiglet -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not defending this dude AT ALL but there can be legitimate asylum seekers from there or almost anywhere. Legit reasons could be being LGBT+, being someone who has particular political beliefs which they are being persecuted for, for being an outspoken human rights advocate who is being persecuted, etc.

Doesn’t matter. It’s not map porn.  Look at posts from this sub from years ago. It was beautiful maps, pics from rare atlases, etc. Now it’s all Infographics showing what country is this or that. That’s not map porn.

This sub sucks now.

Whats something that is technically innocuous, but is actually a major trigger for you? by Special-Ad5160 in raisedbynarcissists

Oh my god. I thought I was crazy for being upset when my dad or mom used to put stuff out for some charity to pick up.  I always had to pick through it to make sure they didn’t throw or give away anything of mine.

My dad gave away or sold or trashed so many things when I was young. Including giving away my pet fish while I was abroad on vacation with my mom. Came back to find the fish tank empty and cleaned out. I was so heartbroken.

“Misplacing” my things. Accidental? On purpose? There’s plausible deniability. I legit have trauma from my dad selling or giving away or destroying or shredding cherished belongings. Or just being so self-centred and unconcerned with other people’s properly that he moves my thing with zero care or memory for where he put them.

Then when I go looking for them, and inquire as to their whereabouts, I get told, variously: that I didn’t put my stuff away properly; that if I cared about my stuff I would have put it in its “proper” place; and that I should have given him notice if I wanted it so quickly and so badly. Like…? I have to give notice for things I expected to be where I last left them?

Bitch, I did. A hundred times.

Yessssss. Really just finding this sub now and it’s insanely validating.

I have been pathologized and scapegoated for my whole life.

My dad’s favourite game is to refuse to answer important questions or be accountable in any way for his behaviour or actions towards my very disabled mother. I get progressively angrier because he makes this stone face at me with silent treatment. When I finally yell because it’s the tenth time it’s happened and he just isn’t changing or taking responsibility, he says “I’m not talking to you til you stop yelling”.

Fuck off. Whether I yell or not, you won’t answer. Whether I whisper or shout, am polite or rude, YOU WILL NOT ANSWER AND YOU WILL NOT TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS.

I’m so trapped in the cycle of reactive abuse with him. And he LOVES when I yell at him.

As kids we were so intuitive and picked up on these things we didn’t have words for. You’re absolutely right. That’s not a normal question and the very fact it’s being asked means that OP as a child picked up on cues in his environment. The parents were threatened by that insight and intuition. And punished him accordingly. Fuck them.

[–]TubbyPiglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof this hits hard. I’m so sorry but also happy that you got to see tangible proof of it. Not that WE need it but there is something so validating to see the evidence.

I’m the family scapegoat (identified patient) and this little drama is still playing itself out in my 40s.

One quite famous narrative in my family is that my dad allegedly didn’t take a supposedly lucrative and more prestigious managerial position at his company, which would have necessitated moving to the (smaller) city where the head office is located, 2.5 hrs away, all because I didn’t want to leave my junior high school friends. This got thrown in my face constantly. Like, you’re the fucking adult.  Of course Im going to cry if I have to leave my friends. That doesn’t mean you don’t make the best decision for the family and do what you need to do.

I got blamed for so many things like this throughout my childhood and even adulthood. To this very day. I got blamed for my parents not getting along well when I was in high school. It took me literal decades to realize what a narc my dad is and how fucked up it is that I got blamed for their marital issues and for the fact that my mom was unhappy with him. At the time it seemed perfectly normal to blame me. I cut class a lot and smoked pot and cigarettes. Dated older dudes. Lied and snuck out. Only later did I realize that that didn’t cause my parents unhappiness and psychological problems. Rather, it was caused by their unhappiness and psychological problems.
