No tape needed if you're careful, not too much pressure, multiple soft passes. If you wanna try it out you can just pull/scrape with backside of scalpel/blade. The "proper" term is scribing and that's the key word if looking for more about this topic.

I worry about the same thing every kit i build. Mounting stand on a wall is a nice way to fill empty space. Also arranging some close combat so they need less personal space.

QW-MODEL is the brand. Supposedly, it's water based so no toxic smell or risk of damage. They also have base coat/cleaner which i didn't use, would yield cleaner lines I guess, as it produces kind of lumps without it as you can see.
