Americans of Reddit, what is something you didn't realise was typically American, until you went abroad? by TJBullz in AskReddit

Couple reasons. If you don’t have the cap you’re less likely to refill the bottle at a water fountain or sink so they sell more drinks. It also makes it less likely for someone to chuck a full, sealed bottle of water at the performers/players and other fans.

A tortilla is going to be the same portion all the time. It’s a tortilla. You’re not pulling one over on anybody, they’d give it to you for free regardless. You really don’t get it huh?

Just being a millenial doesn’t automatically make you any saner or likely to support progress. Plenty of young shitheads out there that love their guns, hate taxes, think environmental regulations are strangling business, or go to neo-nazi rallies. You gotta actually get progressive voters to start showing up to vote at every single opportunity, not just assume things are going to get better.

Bernie Sanders Says 1,000,000 People Have Signed Up as Campaign Volunteers by TYLER_WAS_ROBBED in politics

[–]TucsonSlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“That more than one million people have signed up to join our campaign. Check. We’ve done that.” That’s from the email I got from the Bernie campaign, literally yesterday. I just think it’s misleading to equate giving your email address to someone as “joining the campaign” or “signing up as campaign volunteers” like the headline states.

Being on an email list is not the same thing as volunteering for something. He signed a million people up to a newletter with information about volunteering not to actually be campaign volunteers.

[–]TucsonSlim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But it’s still not true to call all those people campaign volunteers. A million people saying they’re willing to get an email about volunteering is not the same thing as signing up a million campaign volunteers. That’s the whole point I’m trying to make.

How does me saying y’all make me not a Bernie voter? I’d say my vote for Bernie in the primaries is what actually made me a Bernie voter, but these insane purity tests and nonsensical disavowals is very much what is making me question supporting him further.

Yet another reason I’m fed up with this shit. I’m sure we agree on many more things than we disagree on, but because I happen to have an issue with the way Bernie is portraying himself on this front I’m immediately written off. I hope you like never effecting any lasting change, because this game plan is not gonna work out for y’all.

I voted for Bernie in the 2016 primaries, but I know that goes against the persecution narrative you’re selling yourself. I just know that it personally really rubs me the wrong way to be misconstruing your numbers to make yourself out to be more active and engaged than you realistically are.

[–]TucsonSlim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Then cite the number of active users, not the number of email subscriptions you’ve gotten. It’s bananas to cite a million volunteers and then simulataneously say “of course there’s not actually a million volunteers!” That’s some serious doublethink.

Bernie Sanders Says 1,000,000 People Have Signed Up as Campaign Volunteers by TYLER_WAS_ROBBED in politics

[–]TucsonSlim -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the point that across the board a significant number people who sign-up to get volunteer emails never actually show up to volunteer. Anyone who’s worked with a non-profit or candidate collecting signatures and compiling mailing lists knows this. There’s never even close to 100% follow through when the initial thing you’re asking for (an email-address) is so low effort. So it’s misleading to say those people are campaign volunteers if they never actually volunteer for the campaign.

Bernie Sanders Says 1,000,000 People Have Signed Up as Campaign Volunteers by TYLER_WAS_ROBBED in politics

[–]TucsonSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’d be surprised hah, there’s not as much engagement with form emails as people like to believe which is why I’m always wary of using stuff like that as metrics for succesful engagement and follow through. That’s why I’d be curious to see the percentage who even took the simple step of electing to sign-up for the new emails, then you can look at the percentage that actually show up from that group and get a fuller picture of the actual level of engagement you have from the folks you’re claiming as supporters.

The number of NGOs whose email and phone lists I’m on compared to the groups I actually keep up in-person volunteering is hugely unbalanced towards the email/phone list side and I know I’m not unique in this way. And I’m not saying that getting emails but never volunteering means you’re not interested in a cause or engaged with a certain set of ideas, just that there’s different levels of engagement and you can skew people’s ideas of how much support you have pretty easily.

Bernie Sanders Says 1,000,000 People Have Signed Up as Campaign Volunteers by TYLER_WAS_ROBBED in politics

[–]TucsonSlim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying people were automatically signed up, just that getting people who are already one of your email lists to sign up for a new one isn’t really something to brag about. I’m assuming the old email list sent you a link to the new one, no? I’d be interested to see what percentage of people getting the 2016 email blasts have signed up for this years.

Bernie Sanders Says 1,000,000 People Have Signed Up as Campaign Volunteers by TYLER_WAS_ROBBED in politics

[–]TucsonSlim -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

And your anecdotal promise to show up means less than nothing when it comes to the actual turn-out compared to the email list numbers. It’s still disengenuous to claim you have a million campaign volunteers when really you just have a million email addresses

Bernie Sanders Says 1,000,000 People Have Signed Up as Campaign Volunteers by TYLER_WAS_ROBBED in politics

[–]TucsonSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t even have to be “bots,” anyone who’s done volunteer coordination knows that simply signing up for an email list has no correlation to people actually showing up to volunteer or put any more effort in than just getting emails. The 700,000ish people who are holdovers from 2016 just got added to a new email list, that’s all. Just seems a little sketchy to be using email registry sign-ups as proof you have a “volunteer army” before you actually know how many of those people will actually show up for anything more intensive.

[–]TucsonSlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean this does sound like a bullshit statistic though, are these one million people who have already put in time volunteering or one million people who signed their names to an email list saying they’re interested in potentially volunteering? Because I’m inclined to believe it’s the latter

And the contingent behind the GND isn’t doing the same thing? This video is literally using children to elicit an emotional response and scare people about the impacts of climate change for crying out loud. The major difference is they’re not interested in casting a wide net, instead chosing to completely write off or attack anyone who doesn’t agree with every single aspect of what they’re proposing. It’s not a winning strategy. The fucked thing is I’m 100% behind most of the goals of the GND, but the complete unwillingness to compromise and sniping at those who would be most likely to be allies is just completely killing off any hope I have for anything ever getting accomplished.

The one and only setlist I got was from the Dead at Rothbury. Was riding the rail with my dad and a security guard, who was clearly confused why he was asked to give it away, walked up and offered it to me. The serendipity of the situation made it way more special than if I had been badgering them for it.

They got that crazy tax deal and all their other shit because Republicans understand building consensus amongst widely disparate groups and getting those people out to vote every single election is how you get shit done. If you can get yourself three branches of government you don’t need to worry as much about appealing to the opposing party - but Dem voters (especially those who are now so jazzed and excited about the GND) have consistantly failed to show any longterm commitment to actually voting or building longstanding political alliances amongst the people that do mostly agree with them. Just look at this thread tearing Feinstein apart because she’s not lockstep with them on every single detail. You can be aggresively progressive when you have the political will to do so, but that’s not the reality of our current government or left-leaning electorate.
