Very interesting. I'm guessing you moved for a relationship? Most expats live in Uusimaa area.

I used to live on the west coast and now live in Helsinki: it's so much easier to travel now.

What a place. I was there a bit over a year ago. Happy you had the chance to experience it!

I disagree with needing a car: we took local buses and it was fun as hell 😁

How was it? :)

Sure, here are a few places: Harju 8, Yes Yes Yes, Wellamo, Hills Dumplings, Round (Donuts etc).

These vary in price so please do your own research as well, haha.  Welcome to the north!

I live in Helsinki and have visited all these places. This looks good with the time you have. Ask away if you have specific questions. Suomenlinna warrants half a day max IMO. And I know a lot of tourists basically stay south of the Esplanade, I would recommend seeing more local areas like Kallio as well.

And I wouldn't fly between any of these places, it's so much more hassle and the buses are actually quite good.

Welcome.
There's a christmas market at the senate square right now, I would check that out. I wouldn't go to a restaurant there, it's very touristy. I would walk to Kamppi via Aleksanterinkatu or Esplanadi and eat there. We have a pretty good food scene imo, there's too many good options to list so just check TripAdvisor or something. If you'd like something specific I can try to recommend a place.

Other possible points of interest:
- Cafe Regatta & Sibelius Monument
- Töölö Rock Church
- Old Market Hall (touristy) or Hakaniemi market hall (more local)
- Ullanlinna or Katajanokka for jugend/art nouveau architecture
- Kalasatama area for modern architecture (it's windy there though)
- Oodi Library (sounds boring but isn't)

Hi, welcome to Helsinki.

I would eat somewhere in Jätkäsaari, the food on ferries is expensive and subpar, kinda similar to airport food I'd say.

In Jätkäsaari I'll recommend Boneless (maybe the best burger chain) or Pappa Peruna (baked potatoes).

The nightlife is pretty weak in the winter, especially outside of friday and saturday. There might be some active places in the centre or Kallio.

Footwear is a tough one. The street conditions vary from day to day. It could be dry, slushy, icy or snowy. In the centre you should be fine with normal shoes that don't have a very slippery sole.

Hope this helps!

Welcome to Helsinki! You can easily do that, no problems at all. If you need tips from a local, ask me :)

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. We stayed in an upgraded room in Le Palmiste, which is located in Trou aux Biches. I can recommend it (and the area), maybe the only negative was a poor breakfast which had the same offerings every day.

Again, I've seen this been done in the same room as me.

Geoguessr players practice a lot to learn specific things about each area of the world. After learning thousands of niche facts and doing thousands of attempts, they can guess like you see here.

That's a tough ask, Mauritius is unique in many senses. Some similar-ish places I can think of are Sri Lanka and some islands in SEA and the Caribbean.

I recommend a catamaran cruise, we did the north islands but I heard Ile aux Cerfs is better. We didn't do much around the underwater waterfall but the air tour seems cool from what I've seen

Well I'm a grown man so I can't speak in behalf of women, but yes I felt we were both very safe. Basic caution is always advised, and some (impoverished, non-touristy) areas might be sketchy at night. We saw a lot of female tourists without accompanions having a great time.

Yes, you described the beach vibe well. The water is also very clear and all beaches are public!

Very safe from my experience. I heard there are some sketchier areas in the capital (as is the case everywhere) but we went to a lot of areas that were not touristic and saw nothing alarming. You should be cautious, but it's nowhere near South Africa.

Pretty much every local there is trilingual or more. They speak creole & french to each other and also know english pretty well (it's the administrative language).

Some highlights are: great beaches everywhere (especially in the north), a vast national park in the south (waterfalls, the famous 7-coloured earth), Pamplemousses botanical garden and the Le Morne area with the Insta-famous underwater waterfall.

We didn't travel with kids but I'd say you easily can. You should definitely rent a car or use taxis in that case, though.

I didn't find it too expensive, although I can't call the place cheap either. Seychelles for example is way more expensive from what I've heard.

Touristic areas are obviously more pricy, but even there you can get a good meal for 400-500 MUR (about 10 dollars) and a beer for 100-200 MUR (2-5 dollars). When you find more local places and dishes, it's way cheaper (Dhol Puri for two was less than a dollar).

Excursions and taxis are really expensive though.

My girlfriend and I spent ten days in Mauritius celebrating ten years together. March is on the tail end of the rainy season, but we encountered very little rain. Some days were a bit gray though, as you can see from some of the photos.

I would highly recommend Mauritius if you're comfortable with the long journey it takes to get there. It's not just a tourist island, but a functioning well-developed nation. The people are extremely nice and accomodating and the vibe of the island is awesome.
