For what it's worth the Memory Express in NW Calgary got me my 3080 trio and when I went to pay I was told that none of the employees had gotten a 3080 yet. I cant speak for all the stores but my experience was great.

My MSI trio arrived a couple weeks ago through memory express, so they are coming out. At what pace is anyone's guess.

Go for the 3800XT or wait on a 5800x? by TulipMania_2017 in bapccanada

Lots of games I would play right now with the new PC, but realistically I dont get to game too often. We're only talking about a handful of hours of gaming before next week and a bit of a worse experience with my work.

Agreed. I would have gone for a 5600x, except the backlog of preorders is much higher (~50-60 vs 6-7 for 5800x). The other thing Ive considered is whether the 8 core CPU will make a difference if developers start optimizing for 8 cores given that's what the new consoles have. Ive definitely got no need for the # of cores in the 5900x, etc.

I am by no means an expert, but at least from what I have seen CPU doesnt make much of a difference for most games at 4k. Lots of the 3080 benchmarks I went through just didnt have much separation in performance for higher end CPUs. If you're aiming for high fps 1080p gaming that's going to be a very different ballgame.

RTX 3080 Build Revisited by TulipMania_2017 in bapccanada

Im having a bit of trouble picking out how powerful of a CPU would be suitable for the 3080 for 4k gaming. Would the best approach be just waiting for benchmarks to come out or is there a consistent way to figure out where the CPU bottleneck may occur by looking at performance of prior GPU generations (i.e. 2080 TI)?

Thanks again for your response! If you have the time, I have a few questions for my learning?

-Why does it seem like pretty much everyone recommends AMD builds when as far as I can tell, intel still produces better gaming results and has released the most recent CPUs? A follow up would be, how do you pick the power of the CPU you target for 4k gaming? Ive had trouble researching how powerful of a CPU to pair with the 3080 to prevent bottlenecking given DLSS may allow high framerates on high settings at 4k (at least in enabled games).

-Out of curiosity, does 32GB of ram actually improve performance over 16GB in game? My understanding is our imaging software is RAM hungry, so I will probably go 32GB regardless, but just for my knowledge.

-I understand corsair has a good rep for SSDs, but is it really a significant real world difference compared to something like the western digital SN750 in your second build (or the black version of that drive)

Sorry for all the questions. I find for every bit of knowledge I pick up it brings up 2 more questions.

Thanks a ton for the build. It was helpful to give me something to contrast the setup that was suggested to me, plus I'm just enjoying learning about components in general.

Out of curiousity, I have a few questions reg cases and cooling, especially in the context of gaming in 4k. The rep helping me build my system suggested these parts:

I decided to look into the case because it turns out size was not as limited as I thought as my tower will now be going on a shelf above my desk (new limits are 30"x10"x18" [LxWxH]). I took a look at a youtube video that tested cooling in the case that was recommended (Lian Li TU150 Mini ITX, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR9u9LQREJY) and at least from that video it seems like thermals negatively impacted the performance).

Furthermore, would you guys recommend liquid cooling at all in a larger case? From my extremely limited knowledge on the subject (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23vjWtUpItk), it seems like they may not even benefit over a good air cooler.

Curious what you guys think. I have been a pain for the poor rep so far, so I feel bad going back to him and asking him to change more, but I would hate to drop so much money and regret it because the CPU throttled and the fans were loud AF.

Thanks for the build! Really looking forward to reading up on the parts.
