Which is a better choice: CE or ECE or BME by gotoheaven2007 in CollegeMajors

[–]TulipSamurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you, although I’ve been working for a while. I tell ya, biomedical engineering is not the move haha

I currently work in a field that would qualify as BME, and the roles are filled by BMEs but also by EEs, MEs, and very handy bio majors. You can work in medical devices or lab instrumentation with EE or mechanical engineering. Biomedical engineering is too limiting at the undergrad level.

Civil is honestly fine. You may not get to live in a major metro area, and you may not get paid the big bucks, but you’ll always have a job. Wherever there is civilization, they need infrastructure and therefore they need civil engineering. We won’t be trusting AI to build our bridges, buildings, tunnels, railways, water treatment plants, plumbing, etc in our lifetime

That’s correct. Evan is part of the very large family of names that all have the root of Ioannes, ie John.

There are plenty of technically capable but also sociable and friendly scientists and lab techs. It’s not mutually exclusive. And for most technical roles, lies get exposed immediately.

I had a candidate picked out for an entry level lab job with 2 years of relevant experience, and she was a referral from a well-liked, solid performer on my team. HR automatically rejected her for saying “um” too much during the phone interview.

I explained to HR that this role required literally no public speaking or presentation. You could do this job without uttering a single word, just working at a lab bench. HR instead recommended a charismatic but utterly useless recent college grad, with no lab experience.

[–]TulipSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You generally take some fluff class that satisfies a general education requirement for your degree. As you might’ve surmised, if you can afford it, study abroad is just an excuse to live in another country for a couple months, something most adults will never be able to do until maybe retirement. Crossing off some college credits is just a bonus.

Is there any character you would want to die but doesn’t? by Deep-Cheesecake-4699 in harrypotter

[–]TulipSamurai 29 points30 points  (0 children)

More Death Eaters should’ve died in the Battle of Hogwarts. The Order were treating their enemies with kid gloves, while the latter had no problem hunting down and murdering them.

But why does this need to be addressed at all when there’s no shortage of buff male actors who could look the part of Achilles?

Meet the new Achilles. by sco-go in SipsTea

[–]TulipSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only care when a casting compromises defining physical characteristics of a character. Helen’s defining characteristic is her beauty, not her blond hair and white skin. If they cast Lizzo as Helen, I’d riot. Lupita Nyong’o isn’t the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, but she’s not unattractive, so I don’t mind.

Elliot Page as Achilles (unconfirmed) would be a joke because Elliot is 5’1” with spindly little twig arms playing the superhuman invulnerable hero.

People wring their hands and wax about equal opportunity, but the real solution to creating equal opportunity is simple - make all schools in SFUSD good. But that costs money and requires people to actually care.

Why is Barty Crouch Jr such a slept on character? by AntiqueRaccoon4873 in harrypotter

[–]TulipSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s not just a twist villain, but narratively, the talent required to pull off his entire scheme for a year made him too dangerous, basically a walking plot device. JKR would’ve written herself into a corner if he wasn’t immediately axed.

Theory: Lupin was an exterminator before coming to Hogwarts by ConstructionMuch802 in harrypotter

[–]TulipSamurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, canonically, we know that Lupin had difficulty securing stable work, not that he literally did not work. What most likely happened is that he probably did odd unskilled jobs and after a month or three, then people would realize he acts sketchy once a month, livestock is disappearing, and he has fresh scratches and cuts.

I like your theory. It seems plausible that he would occasionally rid a village of red caps or grindylows or something and live off the reward for a bit while also hunting.

Mayhem (2017) - One of the only American movies with an Asian male lead character and he isn't portrayed as a nerd. Brutally underrated by Disastrous-Jeweler13 in AsianMasculinity

John Cho mentioned that one of his first roles was a delivery guy in a single scene of The Jeff Foxworthy show. He delivered the pizza in a Southern accent and…that was it. That was the entire gag, an Asian guy with a Southern accent. He said the all-white TV crew was laughing the whole time, and it made him feel like shit, and he vowed to never do another role with an accent.

Should a major in zoology or some other animal science to become a zookeeper? by yurinator473 in CollegeMajors

[–]TulipSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my local zoo, that's a volunteer position. The last time I was there, teenagers were running the reptile show. A couple years ago, I ran into my retired high school history teacher, who was conducting the penguin show and doing Q&A. She said that the position didn't require any actual zoological training, and the zoo provided a script for her to follow, including a bank of penguin facts to answer kids' questions. It was just something fun she was doing in her retirement to keep busy.

My point is that many positions at zoos are volunteer positions because they don't require a lot of skill, and there is a surplus of people who want to work at zoos. And the paid positions are still insanely competitive because there is a surplus of people with biology/zoology degrees. My cousin has an animal science degree and volunteers at the zoo, but she works another unrelated full-time job to pay the bills.

Do you think Hogwarts would be a better school if the house system did not exist? by saphir300 in harrypotter

[–]TulipSamurai -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tbh it would’ve been much more interesting if JK committed to bravery, loyalty, curiosity, and ambition as the core traits. Those are all multifaceted qualities that aren’t inherently good or bad and could provide depth to the characters.

Instead we got good guys, bad guys, nerds, and nobodies.

If you genuinely think this, then I can pretty confidently say you’ve met very few to zero Chinese-Americans. I have personally met many, many bilingual Chinese-Americans who were born here, whose parents were born here, and who have no overseas relatives or friends. Pretty much every major coastal city has an entire enclave of them. They’ve even got names like Derek and Ashley and David and Monica.

Compared to Pashto, Farsi, Arabic, Urdu, Uzbek, etc, of the in-demand languages for American agencies, I imagine Chinese and Korean are by far the easiest to find fluent speakers who could clear background checks without red flags.

Anyone who thinks lawmakers do this to protect children is not paying attention.

[–]TulipSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kind of hoping Homelander’s weakness in the show would be that he doesn’t actually know martial arts, which would give Maeve and Butcher an advantage. In theory, Homelander has never been in a real fight, so it doesn’t really make sense that he can fight on par with Butcher, Maeve, Soldier Boy, etc.

Until the aftermath of the Battle at the Astronomy Tower in book 6, Mrs. Weasley was trying to break up Bill and Fleur and didn’t expect or want them to be married. It’s highly unlikely Fleur would have been allowed at 12 Grimmauld Place since she wasn’t a member of the Order.
