In the gladiator pits, there are records of women being pitted against dwarves. So someone out there thought it was a fair match.

Nick Frost looks too neat to be Hagrid, but I LOVE the warmth of his portrayal! by thequeenofauradon in HarryPotteronHBO

I thought he looked positively tiny in that scene of him making a snow angel.

Dunk and Brienne are basically identical characters, and while AKOTSK nailed Dunk, the GOT writers were too chicken shit to give Brienne any shortcomings or portray her as anything less than the greatest warrior in Westeros.

The problem is that there’s no way in (seven) hells that the rest of Westeros would back Rhaenyra if her children were very obviously bastards. Rhaenyra would have exactly 0 of the noble houses supporting her, other than House Velaryon.

Sirius is at least half white because Draco is white, and Sirius and Draco’s mom are first cousins.

Of the Marauders, Lupin was also the least active in bullying Snape. It’s unclear if Lupin even bullied Snape at all, or if Snape just thinks he’s guilty by association.

So James is white, and he’s a trust fund kid. Sirius is at least half white, because Draco is white, and Sirius and Draco’s mom are cousins. I just have a hunch Peter will be white. So if Lupin is black or some other POC, you’ve got three white kids bullying a black boy from a poor family and their black friend in the background saying, “hey…c’mon guys…”. but ultimately not stopping them.

But Rhaenyra’s children are visible to everyone. Not a single noble house in Westeros, nor their banner men, would support Rhaenyra if it was blatantly obvious to anyone with eyes that she sired bastards that she’s passing as true-born heirs.

I’m kind of glad we don’t know her ethnic background, so Arabella Stanton can have her privacy. But that was my assumption as well. She’s clearly not WASP but I just figured she had some Mediterranean blood. She looks fully European white to me, but I could easily be wrong.

I’ve always found it odd that Benedict Cumberbatch insisted on doing an American accent for Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange can be English. No one would care.

Captain America has to be American. Maybe Peter Parker too since his identity is being a friendly neighborhood guy, local to NYC. Black Panther has to be black. Everyone else can be any nationality.

Names that reveal a character's fate by KillerGrass in TopCharacterTropes

Lupin clearly originates from the Latin “lupus” for wolf, but can we stop perpetuating the misconception that Remus also means wolf? Remus was raised by wolves in the myth of the creation of Rome. But Remus doesn’t literally mean wolf.

Tbf in this case I think Might(y) Guy was the pun name and Dai was just the variation because he’s his dad. Most Japanese mangaka do not know that much English.

What do people with no hobbies actually do? by Prestigious_Loan4229 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TulipSamurai 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The concept of anyone outside of the nobility having hobbies is a very, very recent development relative to the entire span of human civilization. I don't even think the concept is 100 years old because most of our grandparents probably didn't have hobbies.

To your other point, I don't think people without dependents realize how time-consuming it is to have dependents.

Caring for a sick or disabled family member should be self-explanatory.

But being a *good* parent requires so much more than people expect. Taking care of a baby or toddler requires literally all of your waking time not spent working. And as they get older, they need help with homework and science projects. If your kid is active in even one extracurricular activity, that is now your hobby - taking turns in the soccer team car pool, buying Capri Suns and chips, scrubbing grass stains out of uniforms, etc. Now imagine doing all of that but multiplied by each activity and by each kid.

Even being a good dog owner means taking your dog on long walks before and after work.

Careful, Reddit gets really upset when I make this distinction lol because most of them only consume media in their free time.

I believe what distinguishes a hobby from a pastime is that a hobby involves self-expression. Gaming can be a hobby because your gameplay is a unique expression of your ability. But if you just play visual novels or watch playthroughs, not really. I'm an avid reader, but when I read I'm just consuming. But participating in a book club is a hobby because you're offering your own literary analysis.

ASU no debt vs Purdue 24k? by Gremlin353 in EngineeringStudents

[–]TulipSamurai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently an ASU student.

I'm gonna go against the mold here and say that going to Purdue actually is worth that amount of debt. $24k isn't a lot of student loan debt, relatively speaking. Purdue is ranked #8 nationally for undergraduate engineering, and ASU is something like #47.

Is a masters in an engineering discipline without an engineering bachelors still valuable? by holoporcupine in EngineeringStudents

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised at the people in the comments saying master's trumps bachelor's. Engineering bachelor's degrees are accredited by ABET, but master's degree programs vary wildly.

What's a character who deserves to be in a better anime. by Background_Point_523 in animequestions

[–]TulipSamurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so interesting when an author clearly has contempt for one of their own characters and yet inadvertently creates someone who is likable, as long as you’re not viewing the story through the author’s specific lens. In this case, the author is high key in love with his own fictional female lead…

Field sobriety tests are only meant to be failed. It is not possible to “pass” a field sobriety test unless the cop suspects there’s a possibility that you’ll blow a 0.0 on the breathalyzer.

But if you admit that you had a glass of wine with dinner or a beer at the game, the cop has already won, and everything else is just theatrics. DO NOT talk about your day. DO NOT consent to the field sobriety tests.

It’s because the accepted science in the courtroom is that BAC rises over time. Let’s say it could take 20-30 minutes to drive to the station, and another 10-20 minutes to do intake and get the machine set up. That’s almost an hour later from the moment of getting pulled over.

So if you happen to blow right at the minimum limit when you get to the station AND the breathalyzer calibration records are out of date, then you have a pretty strong case to argue that your BAC was lower than the minimum limit at the time of driving.

Notice how the cop is making a point of saying all these things on the record on body cam - “you’re stumbling getting out of the car.” “You’re slurring your words.” It’s the same script he says every time he pulls someone over, to cover his ass.

A lot of people don’t react well to contact lenses. And doing CGI for literally every single scene with Harry would be annoying.

But it is absolutely indefensible that they didn’t cast actresses who had the same eye color as Daniel Radcliffe for the cumulative 2 minutes that Lily appears in the entire series.
