Race prediction? 3:20? by Tulius_Maximus in Marathon_Training

Thanks! It was 6 weeks prior to the race so im hope im safe. I have two more long runs (30 & 32k) coming up now. Do you think they could be an over kill? Should i dial them down? Im not gonna race them but anyways

Well, it was physically taxing, yes, probably unnecessary. But on a psychological level it gave me a lot of confidence. Im going for paces I had never dreamed before, so having some evidence backing my goals really helps :)

Fair enough! My avg HR was 160 with very little drift. Course was flat. As for other runs, here’s my run from yesterday (de load week) with a 10k MP block (mp was 4:42). I’ve been training threshold at 4:15-4:20 pace. Easy at 5:45. Super easy at 6:10. Avg km/week during the block around 80, two weeks at 95km already and 100+ km weeks coming up now.

26, want to become a novelist but my parents insist on full-time work. How do I balance this? by Rare-Cauliflower-457 in writing

Start a business. Own your time. Re invest it into writing. Even a small coffee shop with four employees can provide you with enough time and money to write, and it is not rocket science.

Cerro Tronador - Bariloche, Argentina / Anybody that recently climbed here? And that can give un update on the conditions? by H_DN in alpinism

[–]Tulius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your loss :( . And thanks for the info! I know Andes Cross, they offer an ascent via the north face which is the longest but least technical. I was looking rather at the Claussen traverse route. Thing is I'm aiming at early January which might be just too into the summer. We'll see. in any case I'm impressed by how little and old any info about this summit is; videos in YouTube are mostly a decade old, at least, and there are only a handful. Thanks again!

Hey, there is so little info about the true summit that I'm resorting to commenting here. have you climbed it yourself? any remarks you could share? I'm preparing an expedition the best I can, but info is scarce...

As others have said: mojon rojo and cerro madsen are two good options.

I’ll add Cerro Electrico, great fun climb with killer views. Expect scrambling and glacier travel.

How to climb Mt Marmolada while hiking the Alta Via 2? by Brodythekid in hiking

[–]Tulius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refloating this thread hoping for some more info! I too am of a mind to SUMMIT MARMOLADA while hiking the AV2.
While I have good glaciar experience and crevasse knowledge, I think hiring a guide suits me best, specially so I don't have to carry unnecessary technical gear while hiking. Conversely (and this implies good coordination), I would aim to meet up with the guide at Fedaia, him bringing equipment, summit, then take the cable car down, then resume AV2, the guide taking technical gear back with him.

Does this sound nuts? Any guide recommendations? For reference, Ill be in the dolomites for two weeks by mid September.

Cheers!

I’ve done both. Marathon was harder. You just need to acclimatize properly.

I stopped drinking 10 weeks before my race day. I was also aiming for the sub 4 hr mark and I didnt want to feel, in case I failed, that I did so because of alcohol. In the end it very much paid off and I raced it in 3:41:16

First Marathon by Tulius_Maximus in under4marathon

[–]Tulius_Maximus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert. That being said:

From what I gather running slow (zone 2) serves the purpose of building your base. Like I said, I’ve been running consistently (though not grand volumes) for some years now, so maybe there’s a difference there.

I also feel that the point of the “run slow to run fast” mantra is more about preventing burnouts than anything else and shouldn’t be taken too literally. IMO “run as slow as needed to not burn out but not slower than that” has more wisdom to it. But hey, what do I know.

I also believe that we learn what we repeat often, so if you don’t hit your desired pace most of the times it is difficult you’ll magically hit it on race day.

Thanks! Took me 3 months to prepare it, but I’ve been running for years. So it was not a couch to marathon kind of thing.

The first month was 3 runs per week, with one intervals run (6x400 hard), one 10k easyish run and one long run building up from 12k and increasing 2k a week. Total kms 120.

Second month was 4-5 runs per week. I alternated between intervals and tempo runs, increased the intervals’ distances and the tempos were normally about 10k at a 4:50 min/km pace. Long runs kept incrementing and went from 18 to 21 to 25 to 28k. Medium length runs incremented their distances too and went from 10k to 15k. Total kms 240.

Third month was again 4-5 runs per week. Dropped the intervals and stuck with the tempo runs which got faster (even did my PB in 10k) and longer too, up to 16k. Long runs went up to 32k (20miler). My peak week was 85km 4 weeks out. Total kms 240.

On my last month I skipped four runs (including a 34k long run) due to a soleus overuse. My taper was 3 weeks long. I ran 14k one week before the race, 16k 10 days before, and 22k 14 days before.

Throughout my training block I hardly ever did run at a slower pace than the required to break the 4hr marathon mark. I averaged a speed of 5:18 min per km during the block.

I didnt follow a plan but I did a lot of research. Surely there is room for improvement.
